is this faster than doing WG with multiple toons for the honor and then buying epic gems directly?

I can suggest doing Water->Fire(turn 2g into ~60g) or Earth->Shadow - cheaper investment, more scaleable. Downside being lower profits, at least with fewer chars.

You can unlock those patterns by transmuting saronite, sometimes can even make a profit on this.
