Mages are great DPS. Ranged DPS is versatile DPS (especially in melee unfriendly TBC mechanics).
Frost, Arcane and Fire are all viable but optimal at different stages of the game.
Frost is doesn't scale so well, it's pretty good early on but later on you would want to spec something else.
Arcane is the highest DPS until late game (I don't know the point exactly, but in T4 and T5 Arcane will do the best DPS if managed correctly). Arcane is also the hardest to play because of how difficult the mana management is. Arcane shines on short fights but suffers from long fights (due to mana). Arcane is especially good with 2pT5.
Fire is the highest endgame DPS in a bug-free TBC core. On Warmane though, Fire is bugged and does less DPS than it should. That's why people spec Frost (or Arcane) instead on Warmane. It's sad because a Sunwell geared Fire Mage can do some serious DPS.
Warlocks and Hunters will outDPS you, with equal gear and skill. In TBC Mages aren't the top DPS class. Fire Mages do scale very well and afaik they are the top ranged DPS in full Sunwell gear but when progressing content you simply won't beat Warlocks or Hunters who know what they are doing.
so whats wrong with fire spec on warmane, WHY it deals less damage and all that stuff?
I'm only lvl 33 current. And Frost isn't that great on this server, SFK was bugged and worgen were immune to anything frost. And the resist ratio compared to actual retail of BC back in the day wasn't this bad.
