As anyone who has been here for a while (or anyone more interested in taking a moment to think instead of making up conspiracies), the website queries the server for number of connected players every few minutes and the displayed number isn't in real time - or you would see it constantly moving, but that would take the aforementioned "thinking" to realize. This is also why the numbers don't update when there's a crash, as the website doesn't receives a reply and keeps the last number it received displayed.
