It's the same as cutting a zero. Given 2 players each with :
a: 200 gold -> 20 gold (180 gold loss)
b: 20000 gold -> 2000 gold (18000 gold loss)
So player a can recover his loss in 4-5 quests, while player b has to do 400-500 quests, since the gold drain only affects players, not in-game rewards.
If you want to stabilize the economy, cut the gold coming into the game from outside. Either reduce the gold rewards at max level, increase AH tax at level 80, add gold removal mechanics (lottery, transmog, black market like MoP (but on the website instead, and with points+gold)....
That was my idea too,and you got economy balance.
I don't understand,
the realm information clearly states that there won't be any transfers allowed.
if the gold rates are x1 and there are no transfers allowed I don't see why any excessive inflation would occur.
Please elaborate
Because the realm will stay wotlk for a looooooooooooooong time. And in that loooooooooooooooooooooong time, gold will only pile on and on, because quest rewards are brought in from outside the economy, adding to inflation.
It's as if, instead of collecting tax from people, the government would just print out new bills every month and give them out. In time, you'd reach absurd amounts of money.
But that still isn't fair, as person b has worked for that gold, it didn't fall out of the sky.
Give us something to SPEND it on, don't TAKE it away for nothing. It's man-hours invested in that gold !
As I remember the economy on lordaeron was just fine before they got it in their heads to allow transfers and threw the realm in the trash can.
Blizzard has inserted plenty of gold draining functions, expensive mounts and materials e.g. as for I see it.
I still don't understand why Kaer quoted someone wanting to buy gold on lordaeron with DW gold, as transfers (and therefor, such transactions) are disabled?
I think, for now, mechanics like epic flying mount, Northrend Flying and dual spec will keep gold amounts in check. Thats at least 7000gold?
The Lottery option is a good one actually. Especially since you dont just buy the item, but buy a chance for an item. Great idea.
The Static gold reduction is worthless. When you announce it, people will spend it all on mats or something else that is relatively stable economy-wise. If you decide to only target lvl80 players, people will send gold to alternative accounts. If you decide to remove gold above a certain cap, people will spread the gold to multiple accounts.
Another idea is to make coins purchaseable with ingame gold. For instance, 10.000 gold for 1 coin. You already have the system in place with the Ragnaros/Deathwing trading system. Should not be hard to reverse it.
Wether you want this or not, looking at possible revenue loss, is a matter you have to decide for yourselfs.
And finally, please just ban multiboxers and botters. They make so much money, they ruin the economy. They are just a few players who do not make up for the ruined server economy imo.
Edit:
Transmogrification is actually a brilliant idea to spend gold on. Just make it 500-1000g to transmogrify an item, expensive enough to drain a large sum of money, but not so expensive that it's impossible.

Static gold drain? That doesn't sound like a good gold drain mechanic at all. I'ts like you want to discourage people from working hard and be rewarded with gold. For me, it should go like this: you farm > you sell mats for gold > you buy items you need.
Lottery? I don't really have a problem with that, if only cosmetics are in game.
Transmog? Best option in my opinion. Lots of people would use it, and a lot of gold would be spent. Plus, it's a nice feature to encourage people to go and farm lower level dungeons and raids.
Please no. We said that we wont point shop on Lordaeron. Why you always come up with this idea???
Honestly cosmetics(blizz shop mounts and pets) , cheap lottery mechanisms and, as much as i hate to say it, transmog are your best bets here for gold draining.
Everybody wants their character to look good so a lot of the excess gold would definitely flow that way.
Now if you want to reserve these options for coins only, then it becomes a little more tricky, so to speak.
Static gold drain would be a big no for me and i would feel cheated if i woke up one day with x% of my gold gone.
It takes away from one of the major factors of why people play this game and that's the feeling of accomplishment or achievement.Honestly i would feel less immersed in the game that way.
Now, i have a limited knowledge about economy, but we have an omnipotent being on our side here.
Warmane staff can produce infinite amount of gold and items right?
So isn't it possible that Warmane itself can influence AH in such a way that, if a need arises, it can drop or increase prices by buying out or posting items? And since it is being done on the AH its all transparent to the players. In other words players don't even have to know that AH is being manipulated.
Its probably a **** idea and way to complicated, but it can be a last resort, right?
That is a lot, lot, lot of work. If done manually.
Another idea is to make an Actionhouse bot, which would post items on the AH for a certain price and never returns any money back into the economy. The downside is that players can repost the items for more money on the AH, which defeats the purpose.
Yes, thats what gonna happen. about 1-2 weeks before the gold-drain every hoarder will purchase all of the most sought after reagents and crafting materials and sit on them until after drain then put them back on AH at the exact same price as before, since auctioneer will tell them to ^^
Gold drain only works if its a surprise, or else it WILL be exploited by hoarders with 1-2 bank-alts with their own guild-banks with 4 slots. My banker already have a guild, now i just need to save money for slots in the guild-bank then ill start hoarding materials like i always do and sell at high prices when AH is empty xD
Another quick idea:
Now Lordaeron is already steering away slowly from the blizzlike model with RDF disabled and now this gold drain mechanics. There was also some talk about chest spawns and so on...
So why not implement some kind of casino type games?
Now hear me out before flaming me.
If you can design a "player vs house" type of a game where where the house(in this case Warmane) always has the edge(more odds of wining) you can have a successful gold drain mechanic.
If you add a social aspect of being able to play with or against other human players, you have a fun pastime that you can do in between battlegrounds or raids.
Best thing about this is: there are already tons of games designed like this(blackjack and roulette come to mind).
Now the tricky part is implementing this system into the game itself so immersion doesn't break.
Having something like Darkmoon Faire only for gamblers is one possible option.
If you are able to do something like this INGAME you could have a fun and optional mechanic that serves as a good gold drain by itself or in combination with some other mechanic ,and if done right, i can't see why it can't be fun!

Erm... so if i sit on a ton of gold and don't want to play any games ? Where does my gold go then ?
