It was used commonly before for gifting purposes before marketplace selling was introduced.
It was so people knew that trader wasnt scammer and it is 100% safe to trade with him.
Not needed unless it is trade in game gold/items for vice versa.

It`s common for me to do trades beyond the scope of the trade window (selling items for more than goldcap, for instance), as I`ve got quite some expensive stuff to buy & sell.
Additionally, I`m tired of dealing with unneccesary risks and annoyances ('please just give 1/2 of the gold in advance'), so I`ll just establish myself as a tradeswoman of illustrious reputation.
Oh, the Cash On Delivery option being capped at 10.000 gold doesn`t help, either.
