1. [Guide] Survival Hunter 4.3.4

Hello fellow hunters, if you're in need of a guide and/or are lost in the Survival spec for PvE then you've come to the right place. Enjoy :)

    -Common Phrases and Abbreviations-
    RAP - Ranged Attack Power
    LnL - Lock 'n' Load
    BA - Black Arrow
    SS - Serpent Sting
    HM - Hunter's Mark
    AS - Arcane Shot
    ES - Explosive Shot
KS - Killsteal... *cough* sorry... Killshot
    CS - Cobra Shot
    TS - Tranquilizing Shot
    DS - Distracting Shot
    IT - Ice Trap
    FT - Freezing Trap
    ET - Explosive Trap
    MS - Multi-shot
AotP - Aspect of the Pack
AotC - Aspect of the Cheetah
AotH - Aspect of the Hawk

    Possible Builds:

Highlighted Green talents are fixed talents you MUST have to perform better. RED highlighted talents are situational and preferred only by your taste.

I would personally switch between the 6% crit under ice traps and the 4 second reduction on disengages to greater increase mobility. Again, situational..

This section will cover each of the fixed talents in the build, with a brief explanation as to why they should be taken.
Will explain why fixed talents are 'fixed'

    Full DPS Build:
This build is made to do the maximum damage you can do. I personally choose this build myself.

    1.1) Fixed Talents
3/3 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=52786 - Must have as we are haste dependent.

2/2 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=82834 - Gives us the ability to do instant damage upon applying SS. With in synergy it gives us survival hunters the best stable aoe dps you could ever ask for.

3/3 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=63458 - Increased damage on your black arrow. Single target dps increase.(Synergy with "Point of No Escape" gives us 6% crit on targets affected by frost trap for longer. AoE DPS increase.)

3/3 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=34499 - 15% chance to grant us some focus back with AS,ES, and BA, allowing to dump more focus for more output.

2/2 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=56343 - 100% guaranteed proc LnL on IT and FT.

2/2 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=56336 - 20% chance per tick on BA, ET, and IT to proc LnL which is a much needed talent for single target. Also Explosive trap increases the proc chances the more adds are affected by it.

3/3 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=34493 - Pretty straightforward. Lowers the cd of your traps and BA by 6 seconds. Take it

2/2 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=82833 - Doubles your crit damage by SS and BA.

1/1 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=19386 - This talent doesnt necessarily provide a dps increase but rather an extra cc and a filler to unlock BA down in the last tree. Being the greatest as we are as Utility. We can CC 2 targets at a time without the need of requiring the target to be undead/dragonkin/beast like others do.

2/2 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=53296 - Increases ALL damage done to targets affected by SS by 10%. This is why we need to keep SS up at all times on targets, also the reason you need to apply this before doing any dps on target.

1/1 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=53290 - 2% agility increase and 10% haste for everyone in the group(Doesnt Stack with Frost DKhttp://cata.openwow.com/spell=55610/Shaman http://cata.openwow.com/spell=8512 Still take it for the 2% agility increase.)

3/3 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=53304: Upon standing still for 6 seconds, grants 6% extra damage to CS, also buffs our crit chance on our KS which is the hardest hitting instant damage abilities by a whopping 15%.

1/2 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=87934: Multi-shot targets are applied with SS. In synergy with Improved SS, makes us the best stable aoe dps in 4.3.4(Also there is no point in adding another talent point in this as it only increases the duration of SS on multi-shotted targets by 3 seconds and the goal is to spam it anyway.)

1/1 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=3674 - It's part of our single target rotation. Must have.

3/3 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=19418 - Reduces focus cost of our ES, and AS, thus more output.

3/3 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=82684 - flat 30% increase in RAP given by AotH.

    1.2) Optional Talents

2/3 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=56340: More stamina= More survivability (allows you the ability to soak Hour of Twilight on Dragon Soul efficiently as deterrence is still bugged and doesn't fully soak it.)

2/2 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=19287: Reduces the cd of disengage by 4 seconds, allowing more mobility(Great for Yor'sahj/Zon'ozz in Dragon Soul while switching to oozes/tentacles or just plain allows better mobility when you need it)

2/2 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=19387: Applies a 4 second root to all targets affected by IT and ST.(Found this greatly useful for Warmaster on Sappers or rooting corrupted bloods on Spine)

2/2 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=53299: 6% increased crit on targets affected by IT, allowing better dps for heavy AoE periods.

2/2 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=34954: Allows your crits to give your pet 10 focus instantly and there is no ICD for this effect.

2/2 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=83356: Your ES and AS crits make your pets basic attacks free. With high crit % and high activity, your pet will pretty much stay at 100/100 focus in your whole encounters so long as you are active, which also synergizes with http://cata.openwow.com/spell=62762 as with a maxed focus pool will buff your pet's basic attacks.

2/3 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=19592: Increased focus regen for your pet. not to be confused with your own focus regen.

2/3 http://cata.openwow.com/spell=19622: provides a large attack speed increase to your pet.

    3) Pets, Pet Talents and Pet Abilities

There are three types of pet families: Ferocity, Cunning and Tenacity. From a DPS standpoint, you should choose between either a Ferocity or a Cunning pet.

However it is important to note that most of the buffs and debuffs currently in the game can be provided in one form or another by pets, and if your raid is lacking a buff, you should choose a pet that provides it, whether that pet is a Tenacity, Ferocity or Cunning pet.

Assuming that all buffs are provided for you in your raid, your choice comes down to either a Ferocity or a Cunning pet. Ferocity pets will generally provide you with higher DPS because of their special ability, Call of the Wild, which should be used in conjunction with Rapid Fire Icon Rapid Fire. Cunning pets also has the ability to grant you alot of focus over time.

When choosing between a Ferocity or Cunning pet, keep in mind that while the Ferocity pet buffs your own damage more, the Cunning pet does more damage on its own along with higher output during executing phases. This means that in a fight where you yourself have low uptime on the target, you should choose a Cunning pet.

All talents are fixed for the highest damage output

    Pet selection should be:
    Cat > Wolf > Wind Serpent/Dragonhawk > Ravager > Snake/Raptor > Any other pet

    Ferocity:

    Cunning:

    Tenacity:

Note: Also remember to turn off autocast on Growl, Cower, and Call of the Wild during encounters

I personally use these glyphs for the most part.

    2.1)Prime Glyphs
-http://cata.openwow.com/spell=63067: gives us a 2nd cd for KS if KS hasn't landed the killing blow the first time.
-http://cata.openwow.com/spell=63066: More crit % on ES

-http://cata.openwow.com/spell=56832: Crit chance increased by 6%
    OR
-http://cata.openwow.com/spell=56841: increases AS damage by 12%

Many hunters pick AS glyph as soon as they hit 2p t13 as it doubles focus gain allowing us to dump focus much more through AS, BUT these two glyphs are very interchangeable and are also situational. glyph of SS gives us a bigger aoe damage increase with the 6% crit increase while glyph of AS gives us better single target damage. Just something you hunters should consider :)

    2.2) Major Glyphs
There's no real preference as to which glyphs to pick out.. Its mostly all situational and preferable. So take your pick on 2 of any of these glyphs.

    Preferred:
http://cata.openwow.com/spell=56857: Reduces focus cost of trap launcher by 10. giving us focus cost total of 10 on trap launcher.

http://cata.openwow.com/spell=56850: Reduced cd by 10 sec
http://cata.openwow.com/spell=56844: Reduced cd by 5 sec
http://cata.openwow.com/spell=56833: Increases pet healing by 60%
http://cata.openwow.com/spell=56829: removed the cd when applied on pet
http://cata.openwow.com/spell=63086: 20% damage reduction when used for 5 seconds. Raptor strike cd is 6 seconds. giving us the ability to shave 20% damage reduction almost ALLTIME if used on cd, at the cost of a global. good to use in between periods of incoming damage.

    2.3) Minor Glyphs
Same as above. Preferable. But i recommend

http://cata.openwow.com/spell=57903: reduced cd on feign death by 5 seconds. helps on when fixated by adds.
    http://cata.openwow.com/spell=57866: removed pushback while casting
http://cata.openwow.com/spell=57904: increases the range in which you give other players 30% increased movement speed. Also to note that while the ranged is increased it also makes you more of a liability for your party members to get dazed when struck, so consider it well.

    4.1)UTILITY

http://cata.openwow.com/spell=5116 Slows the target by 50% for 6 seconds. Does not work on raid bosses. Has a 5 second cooldown, no focus cost and it is instant cast.

http://cata.openwow.com/spell=20736 Forces the target to attack you for 6 seconds. Has an 8 second cooldown, no focus cost and is an instant cast. This ability does not affect the threat table of the mob, and after its effect wears off, the mob will return to its normal top-aggro target. This is very useful for Pre-Ultraxion trash.

http://cata.openwow.com/spell=34477 This ability is cast on a raid member, and applies a buff to yourself that lasts for 20 seconds. Any attacks made during this time will replace this buff with another, 4 second long buff during which all threat generated by you will be redirected to the raid member who you cast Misdirection on. After 30 seconds, the threat redirection fades. It has a 30 second cooldown, no focus cost and it is instant cast. Best used before the fight starts to help the tank gather initial aggro or to use it with aoe to help the tank keep AoE aggro.

http://cata.openwow.com/spell=19801 Removes one enrage effect and one magic effect from an enemy target. Has no cooldown, costs 20 focus and is instant cast.

http://cata.openwow.com/spell=77769 Allows you to place any of your traps at a ranged location of your choice, up to 40 yards away.

    4.2) Buffs and Debuffs

NOTE(PLEASE READ): I can't stress this enough, we're hunters and we are not mainly used for our damage but more for our utility and VERY WIDE range of buffs and debuffs we can provide, a very considerate hunter in providing buffs and debuffs separate good hunters to great hunters.

http://cata.openwow.com/spell=53290 - Increases ranged and melee Attack Speed of all raid or party members by 10% — does not stack with http://cata.openwow.com/spell=55610(Frost DK) and http://cata.openwow.com/spell=8512

The stat priority for a Survival Hunter is:

    1. Agility
    2. Hit Rating until hit cap
    3. Haste Rating threshold
    4. Critical Strike Rating
    5. Mastery Rating
    6. Haste Rating

Hit Cap(5-7%) — You generally need 8% but here in Warmane you only need 5% on level ?? bosses, I personally sit in between 6-7% hit just because adds in raids and heroic dungeons are level 86-87 and does require more hit rating

Haste Threshold - 28% is a sweet spot for haste as it gives us around 1.56-1.57 casttime on your cobra shots and you need to be able to cast 3 CS in 1 ES cd. Beyond this point will increase auto shots and focus regen allowing to dump more focus on arcane shots. Usually in burst fights auto shot is 2nd-4th highest in damage so haste isn't bad to overdo.

    5.1) Reforging

Crit — All of your items should be aimed with crit

Usually from 333-397 overall ilvl you should aim for pve gear that gives Crit+Haste as secondary stats, up until you meet your certain thresholds reforging useless stats like expertise or less desired stats like mastery into hit and haste ONLY if the item doesnt already have crit. Never reforge out of crit for other stats. Crit is by far your most desired secondary stat.

Beyond 397 up to 403/410 you should begin to reforge all of your haste into mastery/hit and or crit as the stats get so high that you will gain so much haste that it loses its benefits beyond a certain point(28% Haste). Just note that the more haste you have the less useful the stat will be, so reforging out of haste and looking for items that have Crit+Mastery along with offset items like neck, back, wrist, waist, etc. with your hit necessities.

    5.2) Gems

    Meta: http://cata.openwow.com/item=68778

Red: http://cata.openwow.com/item=71879 /http://cata.openwow.com/item=52212/http://cata.openwow.com/item=52258(For Jewelcrafters only) on all sockets

Yellow: http://cata.openwow.com/item=71840/http://cata.openwow.com/item=52209 Only if the bonuses are 20+ agil or higher.

Blue: http://cata.openwow.com/item=71862/http://cata.openwow.com/item=52220 Only if the socket bonus is 20+ agil or higher

Note: The reason I say to gem full agil on sockets that do not give 20 or more agility is because if you go for the socket bonus(socket bonus is 10+ agil for example), you are missing out on 10+ agility for secondary stats, agil is irreplaceable and non-reforgable, it outweighs any other stat in the game for us.

5.3 Enchants and 3rd Party buffs

Note: All professions besides the gathering ones provide 80+ stats other than blacksmithing which theoretically gives 100+ stats if used with epic gems.

    Head: http://cata.openwow.com/item=68721- Ramkahen Revered

    Shoulders: http://cata.openwow.com/item=68714 - Therazane Exalted(Unavailable at the moment)/ http://cata.openwow.com/spell=86375(Inscription only) Alternative: http://cata.openwow.com/item=68774(PvP 2000 Honor Points)

    Back: http://cata.openwow.com/item=44457/http://cata.openwow.com/item=52777/http://cata.openwow.com/spell=75178(Tailoring Only)

    Chest: http://cata.openwow.com/item=52779

    Wrist: http://cata.openwow.com/item=68784/http://cata.openwow.com/spell=85008(Leatherworking Only)+http://cata.openwow.com/spell=55628(Blacksmithing Only)

    Gloves: http://cata.openwow.com/spell=44529 + http://cata.openwow.com/spell=82174(Engineering Only)+http://cata.openwow.com/spell=55641(Blacksmithing Only)

Note: Synapse Springs is an Extra Enchant, So that means you can stack the Major Agility enchant with Synapse Springs and even Socket Bracers. :D

Waist: http://cata.openwow.com/item=55054 + http://cata.openwow.com/item=41118/http://cata.openwow.com/spell=82626(Grounded Plasma Shield is bugged and does nothing so nitro boots would be the better extra)

Legs: http://cata.openwow.com/item=56550/http://cata.openwow.com/spell=85067(Leatherworking Only), both carry same stats, only one takes less mats to make.

Feet: http://cata.openwow.com/item=52757(Considering we have disengage I'd prefer this over Assassin's Step)/http://cata.openwow.com/item=52781(+7%Movement speed)

    Rings: http://cata.openwow.com/spell=74216x2(Enchanting Only)

    Weapon: http://cata.openwow.com/item=68134

    Ranged: http://cata.openwow.com/item=70139/http://cata.openwow.com/item=59594

Note: The debate between using Flintlocke's Woodchucker and Gnomish X-Ray Scope is 300 agil VS 800 RAP is silly. Agility outweighs any stat given as it gives not only attack power but a very fair amount of crit.

    -Food-
    http://cata.openwow.com/item=62669
http://cata.openwow.com/item=62290(Requires Cooking 525 to set up)
    http://cata.openwow.com/item=62649

All in which give 90+ agil +90 stam for us, feast and fortune cookies just give desired stats for all classes other than tanks(except for feral)

    Flasks: http://cata.openwow.com/item=58087

Survival has 2 sets of rotations each depended on the amound of haste and if you have 2p t13 or not.

Note: I am not in by any means the best hunter and i wouldn't boast it but this is my comfortable way of DPSing. Control your focus upkeep and LnL procs however you see fit, just follow by me if you feel doubts or feel lost.

Non-2P T13 PvE Rotation: HM at all times... SS - ES - BA - CS - CS - CS - ES - CS - CS - CS (AS to dump if you get alot of ToTH procs)

LnL proc at or above 60 focus: ES - AS - ES - AS - ES

LnL proc below 50 focus: ES - AS - ES - CS - CS -ES

Always try to keep your Focus at or above 60 when you are dpsing regularly

With http://cata.openwow.com/spell=105732 bonus Rotation Single Target: Same as Non 2p except between each explosive shot you are casting 2 cobra shots instead of 3

SS - ES - BA - CS - CS - ES - CS - CS etc AS to dump.

AoE (3 mobs and up): HM on the most desired kill target - TL+IT - TL+ET - ES - MS - ES - MS - CS - CS - MS etc.
    Without LnL: TL+ET(on cd) - MS - CS - CS - MS - CS - CS - MS
    2p T13: TL+ET - MS - CS - MS - CS - MS -CS etc

ES has the highest priority to cast. the more ES u cast, the more dps you are doing. BA on cd with enough focus and ES within 4 sec of its cd.

Burst - To burst, the best way to do it is to use TL and throw Ice Trap at the target(Or depending on your luck with RNG off BA ticks) and then popping CD's to make use of LnL. Dont pop cd's at the beginning of the fight. Save your CD's for LnL to proc as it give the best output.

Quite a few macros i've made out, some have modifiers to relieve some space on the action bars as hunters do tend to have their action bars full and dont have space for much else.

    Killshot Macro:

Kill shot along with explosive shot are your highest priorities and the 2 /stopcasting commands help with getting those killshots off asap, along with if you use a deterence within execute phase and needed to soak some damage off.

    #showtooltip Kill shot
    /stopcasting
    /stopcasting
    /cancelaura Deterrence
    /cast Kill shot

Trap Launcher + Snake Trap Macro:

This macro is to use both trap launcher and snake trap(can set any other traps along with it). the "!" in it allows you to recast it while not deselecting the spell having a faster cast if you spam click it.

    #showtooltip
    /cast [nomod] Trap Launcher
    /cast [mod:shift] !Snake Trap

    Fox + Cobra Shot Macro:

This is so you can cast fox and CS on the move so you can stay mobile whilst committing high output.
"!" in AoTF is crucial as "!" allows you to recast without deselecting the aspect. (Remember in majority of fights i advise not to use this macro unless you really need to move for a very long period of time. Keep AoTH up and stay still to also benefit from Sniper Training(Talent).)

    #showtooltip Cobra Shot
    /cast !Aspect of the Fox
    /cast Cobra Shot

    Hawk + Arcane Shot Macro:

This is to fully benefit from AoTH and also helps to deselect AoTP and AoTF.

    #showtooltip Arcane Shot
    /cast !Aspect of the Hawk
    /cast Arcane Shot

    Hawk + Explosive Shot Macro:

Same as above, but for ES

    #showtooltip Explosive Shot
    /cast !Aspect of the Hawk
    /cast Explosive Shot

    Master's Call to Player Macro:

Dash or Dive to get to you quicker, and to automatically give you master's call.

    #showtooltip Master's Call
    /cast Dash
    /cast Dive
    /cast [target=Player] Master's Call

    All on Burst Macro:

All out burst macro to use all cd's. Hunters do not have an actual cd that increases damage done other than Call of the Wild. So on use trinkets are very useful at this point. Slot 13,14 is Trinket and Slot 10 is Gloves(for synapse springs)

    #showtooltip Rapid Fire
    /cast Rapid Fire
    /cast Call of the wild
    /cast Roar of Recovery
    /use Potion of the Tol'vir
    /castsequence 13, 10

    Max Distance Zoom out macro:

Just to increase the max distance in which you can zoom out.

    /console CameraDistanceMaxFactor 4

    Focus Macro:

    Set focus on target

    /focus

    Misdirection Focus Macro:

    To misdirect your focus target

    #showtooltip Misdirection
    /cast [target=focus] Misdirection

I have 2 variations for this BiS setup as it is situational in some fights. I normally rock Bis #1 unless I'm in an RDF or in short boss encounters or where the short-term burst is needed.

    Armory Link

This just about concludes for this section of the Guide. Next post will be about Addons.

Will periodically bring the guide up to date from time to time in according to bug fixes and such. Happy Hunting! I also apologize for the wall of text. I deeply appreciate those who actually went through it all. This took me such a long time to gather up and made this guide just to help those who felt they needed a guide for them on warmane's forums.

  2. 300 agility vs 800 ap is stupid rly

    300*23.7% = 371agility tottal vs 800 ap
    after 10% ap buff -> 816ap vs 880 ap + (1% crit + ~40dps gain from throwing rabits)

btw serpent sting glyph is 50-60 dps gain and if you make 11 arcane shots per fight, make arcane shot equal to him

I will just leave this here. Check Icds.

  4. flint has 40s cd
    gnomish has 30s cd
still flint is a way better than gnomish for survival

Plus gnomish is instant on first shot, Flint takes up to 20 secs the first proc, sometimes 10. So Xray will be ahead of flint at least 20 seconds always. On the long run is a lot.

Since this icd difference is only on Molten we would need some testing to say but, is not so stupid to say maybe gnomish is better.

  6. for me flint is better btw i dont play here anymore
    it is survival after all

  7. 300 agility vs 800 ap is stupid rly

In terms of bursting or just having 2p t13 Arcane shot glyph would give more output than serpent sting.

so gnomish would have more uptime than flint? im going to have to do some number testing then. :)

Even with t11 if u have 10-12 arcane shots for a whole fight its equal to serpent sting glyph, everything bigger than this amount of shots is dps gain.

lol exactly why i said after 2p t13 you use arcane shot glyph for single target. You're going to get so much focus you're going to have to dump it, and the best way to be dumping is if you have a high number of arcane shots, thus using AS glyph to increase damage output. By the time you're 2p t13 you should be around 385+ and your crit should be high enough to compensate for the loss of SS glyph.

Also want to say in my fights i have 16+ arcane shots per heroic 5 man fight. Having 2p t13. I still stand as SS glyph is good for AoE+ non 2p t13 single target .

  12. yea but u just dont even need t13 for using arcane shot glyph

  13. Good guide. Have a nice day.
    Thank you very much.

Sorry for the wall of text. I plan to add some good bordering and dividing along with some decorating soon :D

I've got a question about my reforge.

    Haste is: +25.90 % (1424 haste rating)

Critical is: 37.71 (2157 crit rating)

    Mastery is: 16.71

Hit is: 6.36% with 1.63 miss for 88 level boss.

Is there anything I can do to improve my reforge stats? Thank you in advance.
