Don't have a clue about the pvp community, but there was a sizable exodus of Alliance players moving to Horde a month or two ago. Overall, I'd say the factions are pretty even, just that they have different goals.

I always seem to run into ganking Horde on Ragnaros that gank my fresh lvl 80 for the fun of it. Where be my Alliance friends out in the wild contested territories. ;3;

I gotta say though, fun times running into Horde that don't do that. We just run and dance and have fun.

So yeah, OP is right. Lovely people, even if you run into them as an Alliance... For the most part.
