Here's something for you zerrubabel regarding global chat.

1 - disable chatter addon
2 - do /join global in your general tab
3 - right click on "global" and then "move to new window" (or smth like that).
4 - activate chatter addon

Now you will have a new "global" window and you will not get spammed in your "general" window.

I'm not familiar with the chatter addon, but moving the gobal channel to a separate chat window is certainly another point I could have made.
