I would encourage you to earn as much gold as you can early on and buy yourself a Battered Hilt. The quest this item gives will eventually reward you with a pretty nice weapon that you can use all the way up to ICC. It seems that these are going for roughly 10k gold right now.

Just buying it is useless as you will have to have enough GS to run through FOS-POS. (4k+)

First of all, you can get a pretty nice weapon from Knights of The Ebon Blade which you will have to do the chain quest or just some of it to earn reputation up to Exalted and you will need to get exalted in Sons of Hodir for Shoulder enchant, same goes with Ebon Blade there you will get the Best head slot enchant.
You can do POS/FOS Normal mode for farming proper gears so you can start doing RDF (Random Dungeon Finder) Heroics and once you managed to get into heroics, you can start farming Emblem of Triumphs and Frost of Emblems (You can get this Daily and from ICC which you will be using to buy t10 Sets and iLVL264 Gears from EOF vendors on Dalaran) And when i say farm. You spam it
For Emblem of Triumphs, you can use them on http://wotlk.openwow.com/npc=35575 if youre Alliance or http://wotlk.openwow.com/npc=35576 if Horde here you can buy t9 Set gears for DKs both tanking and DPS and you can also use EOTs http://wotlk.openwow.com/npc=35494 here

You will also need to farm Reputation for Ashen Verdict up to Exalted because this is where you will get your Best in Slot ring http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=50402 for DPS

Once you get all of those things above you can start raiding. This is the best part.
For TOC10/25 you will need to be 5k Gearscore Above
For ICC10man you will need to be 5k Gearscore above
For ICC25man you will need to be 5.5k Gearscore above
But please, if you ever wanna go raiding. Please read some guides first in order to avoid wiping everybody and wasting everyones time.

Or just do rdf normal till you have enough ilvl to do heroics and just grind.
