1. Death Knight TANK PvE Guide [3.3.5a]

    DK TANK Guide

Fixed and updated Talent links in the 1st comment BELOW THE GUIDE.
Follow those, since the ones in the guide might be outdated.
So, if any of the talent links IN THE GUIDE are NOT WORKING, you should SCROLL DOWN UNTIL YOU GET TO FIRST COMMENT where you will fine: "ALTERNATIVE TALENT LINKS".

This guide (out of all 3) has the least amount of information.
I would suggest u to invest some time in reading at least my Frost DK PvE DPS guide, or parts that are not in this guide (links in 1st comment down below). Main reason for that is so you know everything there is when it comes to this class as a whole (how runes work, macroes, etc...), since this guide has mainly Tank related stuff only.

Overall, here u can find a lot of tanking Specs and explanation on how your Spells work and how to time your defensive Cooldowns, as well as videos of better DK tank players than me.

    Use this as a GUIDE!
This is not a magical post that will make u a great player after reading it once.
U have to work your way towards the top, and by that i mean practice and raid a lot.
This guide will only give u the basic ideas of how things should work and where to put those talents.

    Stats:

    Spoiler: Show
    Defence:
540 is the defence cap. After u reach this u can no longer be critically hit by any target when it comes to PvE (mobs/bosses).
Resilience can also help you reach this.
540 def rating = Decreases the chance to be hit and critically hit by 5.60%.
You can add up any chance to be hit and critically hit Resilience gives you to the same chance def rating gives you and if you end up at 5.60%, you are good to go.
For example, 15 resilience from the Shoulder Enchant you get for 10k Honor, gives you 0.16% reduction in chance to be hit or critically hit, which means that you need 5.45% from def rating to be capped.

    Hit:
U need 9% spell hit from gear + 8% hit from Glyph of Dark Command.
That will put u on 17% hit chance for Dark Command and u wont ever miss a taunt.
I would suggest going for total of 7-8% melee hit (with gear, talents, racials). That, with the glyph, will cap hit on Taunt, and u wont ever Miss a Death Strike.

    Expertise:
164 expertise rating = 20 expertise + 6 from [Veteran of the Third War] = Dodge Cap
    173 expertise rating = 21 expertise + 5 from [Tundra Stalker]/[Rage of Rivendare] = Dodge Cap
410 expertise rating = 50 expertise + 6 from [Veteran of the Third War] = Parry Cap
U can go for 26exp if u want to avoid Death Strikes getting dodged.
If u don’t want to get any expertise, its not a big deal, I simply prefer to get Hit and Exp cap for Death Strikes at BIS gear, where extra survival from minor stamina/armor increase wont be as big as a successful Death Strike in the time of need.
U should try and cap parry only versus Sindragosa and Halion. Those bosses, if they parry u, will get Melee haste which will increase their attack speed by a lot (you will get hit twice in a really short period of time), and u might end up dead in front of them cos of it.
Check the itemisation part, u can find how to cap exp there.

    Stamina:
This is the stat u want to go for the most. Ur heals depend on max % of total HP, the more u have it, the more u will heal. Its also the best stat to go for versus Strong Melee hitting bosses.

    Armor:
U want to get this stat as much as u can after Stamina.

    Dodge/Parry/Miss (Avoidance):
Avoidance is good but its RNG. With some bad luck u can end up getting hit 3 times in a row. In case of high incoming damage, low health pool (HP) and low Armor value u could die if u rely on your dodges/parryes. That's why u should focus on getting more Stamina and Armor first.

    Blood Spec:

    Spoiler: Show
Go for Stamina (and Armor) as your main Stat.

    Dual wielding avoidance: https://wotlkdb.com/?talent#j0EbqIhc...xMMhZ0x:pimM0V

    Glyph of Vampiric Blood

    Minor:

    Glyph of Pestilence

    U can also use:
    Glyph of Rune Tap
    or
    Glyph of Death and Decay
Instead of Dark Command, if u think u wont miss Taunt that often.

    Frost Spec:

    Spoiler: Show
Go for Armor (and Stamina) as your main Stat.

    Double raid buff: https://wotlkdb.com/?talent#j0EMoIhc...0buhZ0o:pwmM0V
    More Avoidance: https://wotlkdb.com/?talent#j0EMRcbc...0buhZ0x:pwmM0V

Dual Wielding Double raid buff: https://wotlkdb.com/?talent#j0EooIhc...0buhZ0o:pwmM0V
    Dual Wielding more Avoidance: https://wotlkdb.com/?talent#j0EooIbc...0buhZ0x:pwmM0V

    Minor:

    Glyph of Pestilence

    Unholy WanabeTank spec:

    Spoiler: Show
Go for Stamina as your main Stat.
Also try to get some Avoidance so u don't lose that "awesome" Bone Shield in the next 10sec after activation.

    Spec: https://wotlk.evowow.com/?talent#j0E...bxcuzbu:poMM0V
    Desecration: https://wotlk.evowow.com/?talent#j0E...bxfuz0u:poMM0V

    Ebon Plaguebringer: https://wotlk.evowow.com/?talent#j0E...xcuzbuc:poMM0V
(I would not suggest you to go for Ebon Plague, unless it is required by your guild/raid leader)

    Glyphs:

    Mayor:
    Glyph of Disease
Glyph of Dark Command/Death and Decay
    Glyph of Bone Shield
    Minor:
    Glyph of Horn of Winter
    Glyph of Raise Dead
    Glyph of Pestilence

    Dungeon Hero spec:

    Spoiler: Show
    Spec: https://wotlkdb.com/?talent#j0EGoI0c...ht0bxoz:odb0cV
In case you find slow from Desecration really helpful, you can remove a point from Endless Winter and max out Desecration: https://wotlkdb.com/?talent#j0EGoI0c...ht0bxbz:odb0cV

Rotation for this spec, before every 3+mob pack pull is:
DnD > IT > PS > *blood rune > Rune Strike (on the target you have least amount of aggro on)
*blood rune = Pestilence, Blood Strike, Blood Boil, depending on the current situation you are facing and the HP of all the mobs around you.

The point of this spec is to maximise Death and Decay Damage (as our main AoE threat ability) and to give u a good Runic Power ability with some solid AoE DMG (Corpse Explosion, u can sacrifice your own pet if there are no nearby corpses, the result will be sheet ton of AoE DMG, and downside is 30sec CD if used that way).
On top of that, the more Death Runes u get from Death Rune Mastery (and Reaping, if you decide to pick this one as well), the better, cos u can spam Icy Touch on Multiple Mobs on each pack pull.
Use DnD whenever u can while tanking multiple (3+) mobs, try to prepare for the next pack of trash with casting a lot of Death Strikes (and Blood Strikes with Reaping) when they are about to die. That way u will have some Death Runes u can use on Icy Touch. If u Icy Touch 3 adds (1 time each) u will have nice amount of threat on them.
When Runes are on cooldown, Spam Rune Strike. Try not to do more than 1 Rune Strike per 1 NPC if u are tanking multiple adds. Track your Rune Strike. U have Dark Command, Death Grip, and Pet Stun (1min CD) in case of danger... Use them wisely and be aware of your surroundings.

    Glyphs:

There are a lot of Glyphs u could use for Dungeon Hero Spec. My suggestion would be to go for:
Glyph of Death and Decay (as your main glyph)
    Glyph of Rune Strike
Glyph of The Ghoul / Plague Strike / Dark Command / Death Grip (If it resets when a Mob dies, if not fak this glyph)

If u think some other glyphs might work better for u, depending on the situations you constantly face, go for them...

    Why these glyphs?
    Spoiler: Show
Glyph of Dark Command: so u never miss a taunt.
Glyph of Disease: gives u a unique ability to refresh Blood Plague by using Blood Rune.
This alone will let u generate a lot more Threat and higher Death Strike usage, aka more Self Healing.
How? If u use Blood Runes to refresh Blood Plague that lets u use both Frost and Unholy runes for only and more Death Strikes. After u cast a Death Strike u will gain 2 Death Runes u can use for maximising ur Threat, aka on casting Icy Touches.
    Repeat.
Frost Rune and Unholy Rune > Death Strike
    2x Death Rune > 2x Icy Touch
    Blood Rune > Pestilence
On top of this, there is no other glyph that will help u with anything when it comes to tanking.
Glyph of Unbreakable Armor and Glyph of Vampiric Blood are there to maximise the value of your Defensive CDs.
Glyph of Death and Decay is great if u go for dungeon hero spec and in any case where you need to cast DnD for a lot of trash mobs. Otherwise, it wont help u alone, almost at all, in raids when it comes to AoE threat if DPS is geared to the teeth.
Glyph of Bone Shield is good, if u are mad and want to tank as Unholy DK.

My advice to u would be to start Practicing Blood and use it 24/7. Especialy in Raids.
It requires highest skill cap out of all 3 specs and it will reward u like no other tank spec if u master it.
When it comes to Threat, all 3 specs are exactly the same as long as u spam IT.
Keep your Diseases up using Glyph of Disease (aka using Blood Rune), use your Frost and Unholy Runes for Death Strikes, and use Death Runes for Icy Touch.

    Itemisation:

    Spoiler: Show
Itemisation 1 (melee and expertise cap):
    Spoiler: Show
    [Sanctified Scourgelord Faceguard] - M (Austere Earthsiege Diamond) + P (10expertise15stam) - 37Stam20Def
    [Bile-Encrusted Medallion] - B
    [Sanctified Scourgelord Pauldrons] - B - 20Dodge15Def
    [Royal Crimson Cloak] - B - 225 Armor
    [Sanctified Scourgelord Chestguard] - B + P (10expertise15stam) - 275 Health
    [Gargoyle Spit Bracers] B + B - 40 Stamina
    [Sanctified Scourgelord Handguards] - B + B - 2%Threat 10Parry Rating
    [Verdigris Chain Belt] - P (10expertise15stam) + B + B
    [Legguards of Lost Hope] - B + B + B - 55Stam22Agil
    [Treads of Impending Resurrection] - B + B - 15Stam + Minor Run Speed
    [Devium's Eternally Cold Ring] - P (10expertise15stam)
[Ashen Band of Endless Courage] - G (10hit15stam)
    [Petrified Twilight Scale]
    [Sindragosa's Flawless Fang]
    [Glorenzelg, High-blade of the Silver Hand] - B + B + B - Rune of the Stoneskin Gargoyle
    [Sigil of Insolence]

This is itemisation should have "highest" EHP, and I use it for almost everything except Lich King 0% LoD, where you want to maximise Armor.
https://imgur.com/a/sdwyG7J - it is best on a Human because of extra 3 expertise from racial.
The reason I prefer this itemisation, and to cap Hit and Expertise, is mainly because of more solid aggro that will let me do more Death Strikes that will have a higher chance to hit the target and not get missed or dodged (parry can still happen).
DK is unique in a way that can self heal, while other tanks can't which is why I try to maximise this kind of play style with this gear.
Spec I use for this itemisation is: https://wotlk.evowow.com/?talent#j0E...g0xVMhz:pihM0V, which provides the highest aggro gain while spamming Death Strikes.
With this itemisation and spec, while playing well, you can tank anything in this expansion with ease, except Lich King 25m HC without the 30% raid buff.

In case you did not chose the Human race, and you want to cap expertise, get 40 Expertise Food and you should be fine.
164 rating = 26 expertise, you have 114 from Gloren, work out the other 50 with food and/or gems.

Itemisation 2 (a LOT of Armor):
    Spoiler: Show
    [Sanctified Scourgelord Faceguard] - M (Austere Earthsiege Diamond) + P (10expertise15stam) - 30stamina 25shadow resistance
    [Bile-Encrusted Medallion] - B
    [Sanctified Scourgelord Pauldrons] - B - 30stamina 15resilience
    [Sentinel's Winter Cloak] - B - 225 Armor
    [Sanctified Scourgelord Chestguard] - B + B - 275 Health
    [Gargoyle Spit Bracers] - B + B - 40 Stamina
    [Sanctified Scourgelord Handguards] - B + B - 20 Hit
    [Verdigris Chain Belt] - B + B + B
    [Pillars of Might] - B + B + B - 55Stam22Agil
    [Treads of Impending Resurrection] - B + B - 15Stam + Minor Run Speed
    [Devium's Eternally Cold Ring] - B
[Ashen Band of Endless Courage] - B
    [Satrina's Impeding Scarab]
    [Sindragosa's Flawless Fang]
    [Cryptmaker] - B + B + B - Rune of the Stoneskin Gargoyle
    [Sigil of Insolence]

This is the itemisation you want for Lich King 25m HC LoD without 30% raid buff.
It sacrifices Hit and Expertise from the previous build for more armor mainly.
You will be on 243 hit (which you can lower to 223 if you are Draenei), and 9, 12, or 14 Expertise, depending on which race you decided to go for.
Glyph of Dark Command is mandatory in this build so your taunt is always spell hit capped.
Spec I would use for this build is: https://wotlk.evowow.com/?talent#j0E...VMhzZ0b:mpi0MV, in case your Raid doesn't have a Frost DK or Enha shaman, or: https://wotlk.evowow.com/?talent#j0E...xcMhZ0x:mpi0MV in case someone else is already providing 20% Melee Haste buff to the raid.
https://imgur.com/a/ChEnU41 - In this picture I have Glorenzelg since it seems I sold Cryptmaker (Bank Space I guess, was dumb).
Overall Armor will be the same with Cryptmaker, you will just have 99 more hit and 10 expertise (if Human).
You should also have a bit more stamina, 52k+, since I dont have 30 stamina shoulder enchant here, and I have couple of 10hit/expertise15stamina gems that should be 30 stamina with Cryptmaker.

    Itemisation 3 (Bryntroll):
    Spoiler: Show
    [Broken Ram Skull Helm] - M (Austere Earthsiege Diamond) + P (10expertise15stam) - 37Stam20Def
    [Bile-Encrusted Medallion] - B
    [Sanctified Scourgelord Pauldrons] - B - 20Dodge15Def
    [Royal Crimson Cloak] - B - 225 Armor
    [Sanctified Scourgelord Chestguard] - B + P (10expertise15stam) - 275 Health
    [Gargoyle Spit Bracers] B + B - 40 Stamina
    [Sanctified Scourgelord Handguards] - B + B - 2%Threat 10Parry Rating
    [Verdigris Chain Belt] - P (10expertise15stam) + B + B
    [Sanctified Scourgelord Legguards] - G (10hit15stam) + B - 55Stam22Agil
    [Treads of Impending Resurrection] - B + B - 15Stam + Minor Run Speed
    [Devium's Eternally Cold Ring] - B
[Ashen Band of Endless Courage] - B
    [Satrina's Impeding Scarab]
    [Sindragosa's Flawless Fang]
    [Bryntroll, the Bone Arbiter] - B + B + B - Rune of the Stoneskin Gargoyle
    [Sigil of Insolence]

This itemisation works best for Orcs from my point of view.
With 123 Expertise Rating you are on exactly 26.00457 Expertise. :D
In case u want to use Bryntroll on other Race, you wont be expertise capped and might want to change the itemisation completely.
You can use expertise food, and end up on 163 rating which is 25.88411 Expertise. :'(

    Itemisation 4 (DW):
    Spoiler: Show
    [Sanctified Scourgelord Faceguard] - M (Austere Earthsiege Diamond) + P (10expertise15stam) - 37Stam20Def
    [Bile-Encrusted Medallion] - P (10expertise15stam)
    [Sanctified Scourgelord Pauldrons] - B - 20Dodge15Def
    [Sentinel's Winter Cloak] - G (10hit15stam) - 225 Armor
    [Sanctified Scourgelord Chestguard] - B + P (10expertise15stam) - 275 Health
[Gargoyle Spit Bracers] G (10hit15stam) + B - 40 Stamina / [Bracers of Dark Reckoning] (for more avoidance)
    [Sanctified Scourgelord Handguards] - G (10hit15stam) + B - 20 Hit
    [Verdigris Chain Belt] - P (10expertise15stam) + B + B / [Belt of Broken Bones] (for more avoidance)
    [Legguards of Lost Hope] - B + B + B - 55Stam22Agil
    [Treads of Impending Resurrection] - B + B - 15Stam + Minor Run Speed
    [Devium's Eternally Cold Ring] - B
[Ashen Band of Endless Courage] - G (10hit15stam)
    [Satrina's Impeding Scarab]
    [Sindragosa's Flawless Fang]
[Mithrios, Bronzebeard's Legacy] - B - Rune of the Nerubian Carapace
[Mithrios, Bronzebeard's Legacy] - B - Rune of the Nerubian Carapace
    [Sigil of the Frozen Conscience]

The only Race that can use this build to its potential is Dwarves.
Here I would use 40 hit 40 stamina food, and regem all those green gems with blue ones.
5 expertise will make it easy to get expertise to 26 or 56 in case you want to avoid getting demolished by parry haste.
The spec I would use for this build is: https://wotlk.evowow.com/?talent#j0E...VMhzZ0b:hpi0MV

Itemisation 5 (Parry Haste Expertise Cap):
    Spoiler: Show
    [Sanctified Scourgelord Faceguard] - M (Austere Earthsiege Diamond) + P (10expertise15stam) - 37Stam20Def
    [Bile-Encrusted Medallion] - B
    [Sanctified Scourgelord Pauldrons] - B - 20Dodge15Def
    [Royal Crimson Cloak] - B - 225 Armor
    [Cataclysmic Chestguard] - B + B + B - 275 Health
    [Gargoyle Spit Bracers] G (10hit15stam) + B - 40 Stamina
    [Sanctified Scourgelord Handguards] - G (10hit15stam) + B - 20 Hit
    [Verdigris Chain Belt] - P (10expertise15stam) + B + B
    [Sanctified Scourgelord Legguards] - G (10hit15stam) + B - 55Stam22Agil
    [Grinning Skull Greatboots] - G (10hit15stam) + B - 15Stam + Minor Run Speed
    [Devium's Eternally Cold Ring] - B
[Ashen Band of Endless Courage] - G (10hit15stam)
    [Satrina's Impeding Scarab]
    [Sindragosa's Flawless Fang]
    [Glorenzelg, High-blade of the Silver Hand] - B + B + B - Rune of the Stoneskin Gargoyle
    [Sigil of Insolence]

This itemisation is only for Sindragosa and Halion!
For this itemisation, u need to use 40expertise40stamina Food, or simple match some more Puple Gem slots with 10expertise15stamina gems (Neck, Ring, Shoulders, Chest - if u match the Chest Purple gem, take the Green gem from Gloves and match Chest colors, and put 2x B in gloves to maximise the total stamina gain)... U need 410 Expertise Rating to cap Parry haste which is 56 Expertise.
U will be on 238 Hit Rating with this gear. U can get both Hit and Expertise cap...
Miss wont change almost anything, while Parry will make boss hit u a lot faster, and that is something u dont want.
U should use Glyph of Dark Command for this itemisation cos of the low Hit Rating.

In case u want to maximise Stamina from gems, use 40 Expertise 40 Stamina food, and just get 1x 10exp15stamina gem in Helm. This will always cap Dodge Expertise @26 as long as u use Glorenzelg. Rest of the Gems should be mainly 30 Stamina and 10hit15stamina in case u have less hit, but not too many. There is also an option of 40 Hit 40 Stamina food if you dont care about Expertise and want to maximise stamina gain from gems.
Other than this, 40 agility 40 stamina food should be the best choice cos it will provide some extra Dodge and Armor.

Difference btwn Double Milthrios and Glorenzelg:
When it comes to avoidance its: 1% Miss Chance, 0.5% Dodge and 1% Parry in favor of Double Milthrios.
When it comes to aggro: Itemisation with Two Handed weapon will have higher single target Threat generation duo to higher DMG on Rune Strike and other Melee Abilities, but it wont matter that much in the end.
DK is a Threat Beast, as long as u use Icy Touch, u will have more than enough single target threat with both itemisations.

The MAIN downside of Dual Wielding is bosses with PARRY HASTE (Sindragosa and Halion).
If u Dual Wield and u don't have Parry Exp Cap on those bosses, u will die almost 100%.
Ether get Parry Exp Cap for those bosses, or carry a two handed weapon for them.

Depending on what u want, change sigil:
[Sigil of the Frozen Conscience] for more Single Target Aggro.
[Sigil of Insolence] for more Avoidance.

    Gemming:
When it comes to gemming u can use:
    10exp15stam
    10str15stam

    10hit15stam
U should match gem color in items such as:
    Helm - +12stamina
    Chest - +9stamina
    Belt - +9stamina
    Legs - +9stamina
    Feet - +9stamina

These items should cover the need of extra hit/exp.
If they don't, get some gems in items that gives u +6 stamina as bonus anyway (neck, cloak, rings, shoulders, gloves, wrist).
Its better to cap hit/exp for the cost of some minor health from my pov (in case you gain 9 stamina from matching the sockets), especially when u are BiS (this is not the case for LoD 25m hc without the 30% buff, where you dont care about hit or expertise and just want to survive really hard hits from the Lich King).

If u ask me, u should ALWAYS match those Red/Yellow Socket Gems as long as they give 9+ stamina in return (10 Strength/Expertise/Hit + 15stamina, it doesnt matter what).
If u don't like that u don't have to do it, its something i prefer to do since u get more overall stats for the cost of minor stamina lost...

Again, There are 3 Bosses in game that have "Parry Haste" (Lady Deathwisper, Sindragosa, Halion - altho Lady wont ever one shot u from Melee attacks so u don't have to worry about capping parry vs her).
That ability gives them HASTE, aka attack speed, when they Parry one of your Attacks (more like an fast Extra Auto Attack). To avoid this as much as u can, simply use a Two Handed weapon VS those bosses, and try to get as much expertise as u can.
If u can get 56 Expertise, GREAT!
If u cant, simply use Glorenzelg, Expertise Feet, T10 Legs, LDW Hit Helm, Expertise Food and hope for the best.

    Rotation:

    Spoiler: Show
There is no strickt rotation for Tanking.
You use what you need at given situations...

However, If u do want a strict rotation for tanking, i would suggest something like this:
    IT > PS > BS > IT > PS > BS > IT > PS > BS > ... repeat.
    IT > PS > BS > DS > BS > DS > Pesti > IT > IT > BS > IT > IT > BS > DS > Pesti > DS > BS > …
Once u open with IT > PS and u have both Diseases on ur Target:
Use Death Strike consuming Frost and Unholy Runes.
Use Icy Touch consuming Death Runes u got from Death Rune Mastery after using Death Strikes.
Use Pestilence to refresh Blood Plague (and Frost Fever).
Use Blood Strike to refresh Blade Barrier.
In case of Danger use Death Strike using Death Runes, if u need some extra Healing.
In case u lack some threat, use IT and PS using normal Frost and Unholy runes, instead of DS.

Overall, use runes depending on things u need depending on the situation u are curently facing.
Runic Power should only be used for Rune Strike (this is for Main Tank only, if u are offtanking u can cast couple of Death Coils aswell if u have free GCDs).

    Highest Threat burst opener:
    IT > IT > BT > IT > ERW > IT > PS > BS > IT > PS > IT > ...

Abilities and how to use them...
    Spoiler: Show
*Icy Touch* = ur main Aggro Ability.
If u need A LOT of aggro spam it like crazy.
Like seriously, dont rely on other abilities when it comes to Aggro. Icy Touch or a random DPS will die cos u are a bad tank.

    Threat formulas:
    Icy Touch Damage - 1000 * 2.0735 (Frost Presence Mod) * 7 (Icy Touch Mod) = 14514 Threat.

    Heart Strike/Blood Strike/Death Strike/Any normal ability Damage - 3000 * 2.0735 (Frost Presence Mod) = 6220 Threat.

    Rune Strike Damage - * 2.0735 (Frost Presence Mod) * 1.75 (Rune Strike Mod) = 9071 Threat

    Death and Decay Damage - 500 * 2.0735 (Frost Presence Mod) * 1.9 or 2.0 (DnD Mod) = 2000 Threat per tick
-This (DnD) modifier WAS apparently broken and iWAS not working properly on Warmane. Hope it got fixed (I dont know, didnt check).

(Numbers for Damage of ALL above abilities are taken by random from my head, to be an example of end results, nothing else)

Thank you Imey for these numbers. :D

*Death Strike* = ur main Healing Ability.
If u need healing save some Frost and Unholy runes and click that Death Strike 0.1sec after u take Damage so u can instantly heal up. Try to track Boss Swing timer, Spells he casts, so u can always be prepared when to Heal if needed.
If thats not enough save a Blood Rune and pop Rune Tap aswell.

*Rune Strike* = something to waste Runic Power on and it helps u keep the Aggro up.
DONT, I REPEAT, DO NOT RELY ON THIS ALONE TO KEEP UR AGGRO UP!!!
If u want high Aggro SPAM Icy Touch. Rune Strike is just a filler and something to waste Runic Power on without consuming a GCD.

Explanation: when talking about Threat and how its Important to Spam Icy Touch (IT), im talking to a new player that has no Idea how DK works as a tank. U can keep aggro without mindlessly spamming IT when u know how Threat works. For new players, and with all of the missinformation arround here on forums, i find it crucial for them to realise that IT will be the only tool that will help them, especially early game, not to lose aggro. Once they grow as players they will know exactly what and when to do...

As a tank u should always think ahead and try to prevent / heal up the incoming Damage.
Same goes when it comes to Aggro. If u know adds will come try to position yourself and prepare your runes for it. If u need to Aggro multiple adds, use some Death Strikes / Blood Strikes (depending on if u are blood or frost spec) so u can get as many Death Runes as u can to spend them for Icy Touches.

IF you want aggro: SPAM ICY TOUCH, nothing else will help u with that.
IF you want to avoid getting Killed: TIME your DEATH STRIKE/RUNE TAP and your DEFENCIVE COOLDOWNS.
One more time, ICY TOUCH will do more Threat than all your other abilities combined.
Use RUNE STRIKE to get some extra Threat, but don't rely on it.
If u don't do this, u or someone will die, that will make u a bad tank. Don't be a bad tank.

    DEFENCIVE COOLDOWNS:
    Spoiler: Show
When it comes to defensive CDs try not to stack Major and Minor defensive Cooldowns.
U can stack Minor Cooldowns if every Major is already used, but timing them correctly is what separates bad from good Tanks.

    Icebound Fortitude:
    MAJOR defensive CD.
Use it when u are almost 100% sure u will die otherwise.

    Anti Magic Shell:
Use it when u are about to take some burst Magic Damage (Breath, Some kind of Singletarget/AoE Spell...).

    Vampiric Blood:
    MINOR defencive CD.
If u have ToGC Scarab trinket, try combining them as in, use Vampiric Blood with it OR use it 2sec before Scarab activation is about to run out of time.

    Unbreakable Armor:
    MINOR defensive CD.
Its good when u want higher aggro output and when u want to mitigate incoming physical damage.

    Blood Tap:
U should get 4/5 T10 and get another MINOR defensive CD.

    Army of the Dead:
    MAJOR defensive CD.
If u don't have anything left u can use this and just stand in place and cast it.
Try to save some runic power before doing this, after its done u can use Death Pact in order to heal a lot instantly.

    Rune Tap:
    Minor Defensive Heal
Use if u know healers cant top u.

If Icebound and AotD are both on CD try combining Vampiric Blood with Blood Tap if u know u will die doing them separately.

    Trinkets:
Both [Satrina's Impeding Scarab] and [Sindragosa's Flawless Fang] are considered MINOR defensive CDs. They are a bit weaker than your spells so use them wisely.

    Tank tips:
    Spoiler: Show
Overall ur AoE threat sux big time. Nothing u do can help u with that.
DnD is not working properly when it comes to extra Threat on Warmane.
DKs are superior to single target Threat, number of Def CDs, and survability compared to other tanks, so blizzard had to take away something from them i guess. So u should try and aim to be a Main Tank.
If u want to tank dungeond u should use one of the dungeon hero specs i linked, Blood is purely for raid tanking and it sux diks when it comes to aoe aggro.

Il take both Halion and Lich King as examples when it comes to Raid Boss tanking...
Dont quote every word i say, some of the things can be done better, some of the things u might need to change and so on... This is purely just to give a closer look to those that never tanked before.

At start of both fights u dont need almost any defencive CD.
U can use those 1min Defencive Cooldowns if u are 1000% sure u wont need them at all untill they finish their CD.

On Halion u want to build as much Threat as posible on the boss (Spam IT like crazy) before first Inferno comes.
IT > IT > BT > IT > ERW (u can skip this part if u want to save ERW for extra DSs later in p3 if needed)
This is what u can do after ERW/or use it as an opener if u want to save ERW:
IT > PS > IT > PS > *BT (if u skipped the Burst opener)* > IT > BS

When u see that meteor droping down, save ur Frost runes (for IT on Inferno). U want to use atleast 2 ITs on the Inferno at start so u can have solid Threat on it.
Since almost every healer is outside healing only u, u dont need def CDs almost at all. Keep 1 Blood Rune up as backup for Rune Tap/Vamp Blood when u are tanking both boss and Inferno (dont forget to triger deflection so use 2nd Blood Rune right before 1st is about to finish its CD). U can also use AMS and Sindra trinket if u feel the need (when boss is on 60-80% cast time of his Breath). All of these CD should be ready when u reach p3.

In P3 u need to track couple of things.
    1. Corporeality %. U should combine 2 minor def CDs (Scarab ToGC trinket and VB are perfect for this if u are outside and corporeality is high) in order to build threat with IT spam. If u are inside just keep rotating ur Cooldowns when healers have to move since u alrdy have nice amount of Threat from p2.
If it goes up (Corporeality) to 40%+ use Icebound. Otherwise keep Rotating Minor Def Cooldowns while u are tanking that Inferno/when healers are moving on the cutters inside, and be ready to pop Death Strike and Rune Tap.
    2. When the Big add is about to spawn/When cutters are about to happen.
    3. When boss is about to breath u.

Again, try to use a minor def CD when tanking both of them/moving with cutters, use AMS and Sindra trinket to reduce breath DMG when tanking both if them/moving with cutters.

Time ur Cooldowns and ur Death Strikes. Use pestilence to keep Blood Plague up, use Death Runes from Death Strikes for IT spam, use normal runes to heal with Death Strike (there will be the time when u will have to use DS consuming desth runes cos dmg will be too high, just make sure u are safe before u spam IT and inform ur DPS to chill/ask for salvation on them if needed).

    On LK p1 starts:
Build up ur Threat, use ERW for the Burst, Spam IT.
When boss starts getting buffed by Necro Plague start using minor CDs. U can use Icebound before the push if u feel like u might die. Be fast on Rune Tap and Death Strike binds.
Vampiric Blood combined with Scarab TOGC trinket can help u survive almost anything if u know how to time Death Strike and Rune Tap. Its practicly 2nd Icebound kind of cooldown when u combine those 2.

    Ragings:
DK is a threat monster. Couple of IT (crits especialy) and u can overagro any tank/dps easy.
So... Spam IT, u wont need healing from DS at this stage most likely (unless u are tanking 3 of them).
Ask rets to dispel u if u get silenced.

    LK P2.
Try to be smart and not take unnesesary hits like, when u enter phase 2 Lich King will cast Infest soon. DO NOT move towards him instantly. Avoid getting hit and get close to him/position to the midle, after he casts that Infest (try to prevent it with AMS - infest).
Soul Reaper. This is the one and only thing u should watch in this phase (Part from positioning the boss well in the midle).
Track and pop ur major def CDs and self heals. With a good Prot Paladin offtank and good timing of ur Defencives, u should be able to solo tank p2 easy (unless ur healers are bad).
Icebound + Sindra trinket will help u survive SR.
ToGC Scarab trinket + Vampiric Blood + AMS + Rune Tap can help u survive SR.
AMS/Sindra trinket + Army of the Dead + Death Pact after u finish ur cast if needed, and Rune Tap will help u survive.
Rotate them well and use them properly. Ask for Sac if needed.
Keep disease up on ur target using Glyph of Disease.
Use Normal Fr and Unh Runes for Death Strikes.
Use Death Runes u got from DS for IT spam.
Rotate and time ur def CDs.
    Practice...

LK P3 is more or like same **** as P2. U need to watch for those reapers. If u are offtanking and if u have to soak spirits, use AMS/Sindra Trinket/Blood Tap/Vampiric Blood when they are about to hit u..

    Tanking videos:
    Spoiler: Show
Video of tank spell rotation (its not a strict rotation):
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7rnTi1mBn8&t=1s
U can see here how and when i use runes.
Split the Blood Runes so that way u can almost always use Vampiric Blood if needed (do this after the pull since u want the 5% damage reduction talent up asap).
Don't use this 24/7. As I said, this video is just an example of how things can work in combinations with different rune colors.
Sometimes, if u expect a lot of incoming damage, u will need to wait and not use runes at all, especially Frost and Unholy. Just pop 1 pestilence and be ready to do Instant Death Strikes and Rune Tap if some huge DMG comes in your way and healer cant be there to save u...

Provided by Heraxion, thanks a lot scrub. :D

All the Best in Slot items will be gained once u start raiding TogC 25m hc, ICC 25m hc, RS 25m hc.
Until than as long as Item A gives u more Stamina and Armor than Item B, u want to go for Item A (as long as u are Hit and Expertise capped), so please don't ask questions like is this item better than this item?
Get what u can hope those BIS items will drop soon.

    Just PRACTICE A LOT.
U need to really understand how to use your runes, in order to maximise aggro gain and sustain at the time of need. Also, defensive cooldown rotation is really important, and should be learned asap.
U can read 1000 guides, if u don't have the practice, u wont get any better.
You need to understand the class inside out on top of tanking in game mechanics in order to be a good DK tank. Do your homework.

READ everything i wrote. There is a good reason behind every word i said.
If i forgot to mention something, or u have an idea what i can add to the guide to help new players find their answers in one thread please comment below. Or if u see any mistakes i made i guess...

Thanks for reading. Best of Luck.
Hope i did help some of u slacks...
    Regards, Gnimo.

P.S. This guide was a fast written one. I might work on it, i might not... Use the talents i linked, read about how to use your defensives, abilities and what are their uses in different situations, watch those tank videos as well, but overall its all about practice and how used to tanking u are.
Again, IT (Icy Touch) = Aggro, do not IT once at the start of the fight and forget about it, your top DPS might die cos of that...
IT, IT, IT, IT, IT, IT, don't let your DPS die cos u are bad.

Guide is not perfectly written. It still has some things i could work on... However, it has basic information about Death Knights. As said at the start of the Guide, PRACTICE and LEARN the ROTATION part, rest is not as important. I might update it again, I might not, its really boring and it doesn't bring me any kind of satisfaction. If I forgot something or if u have any questions, ask below in comment section.
U have more than enough Information in all 3 Guides to be a GREAT DK. Just read them... Best of Luck.

    Edit 21st May:
    Frost guide should be complete.
Unholy guide needs a little bit of polishing.
Tank guide needs a lot of work.

Use this guide as a base on which you need to improve a lot.
    Best of luck. :)

    ALTERNATIVE TALENT LINKS:

    Blood:
Double raid buff, high aggro: https://wotlkdb.com/?talent#j0EMqIbI...g0xVMhz:pihM0V

Double raid buff, 'bit more avoidance: https://wotlkdb.com/?talent#j0EMqIhc...VMhzZ0b:pimM0V

    Avoidance: https://wotlkdb.com/?talent#j0EMqIhc...xcMhZ0x:pimM0V

A bit more AoE aggro and Self Healing: https://wotlkdb.com/?talent#j0EMqIbf...t0MZ0gb:pioz0V
    Dual wielding avoidance: https://wotlkdb.com/?talent#j0EbqIhc...xMMhZ0x:pimM0V[/center]
(Nerves of Cold Steel are mainly taken because of hit increase, if you are capped without it, skip it)

    Frost:
    Double raid buff: https://wotlkdb.com/?talent#j0EMoIhc...0buhZ0o:pwmM0V

    Avoidance: https://wotlkdb.com/?talent#j0EMRcbc...0buhZ0x:pwmM0V
(1 more point in Black Ice wont matter, Lichborne is there mainly because of Fear/Charm/Sleep removal on few encounters)

    Longer Icebound Fortitude: https://wotlkdb.com/?talent#j0EMofbc...buhhZ0b:pwmM0V

Dual Wielding Double raid buff: https://wotlkdb.com/?talent#j0EooIhc...0buhZ0o:pwmM0V
    Dual Wielding more Avoidance: https://wotlkdb.com/?talent#j0EooIbc...0buhZ0x:pwmM0V
(same as in Blood, Nerves of Cold Steel only if you lack hit)

    Unholy:
    Spec: https://wotlk.evowow.com/?talent#j0E...bxcuzbu:poMM0V

    Desecration: https://wotlk.evowow.com/?talent#j0E...bxfuz0u:poMM0V

    Ebon Plaguebringer: https://wotlk.evowow.com/?talent#j0E...xcuzbuc:poMM0V
(I would not suggest you to go for Ebon Plague, unless it is required by your guild/raid leader)

    Dungeon Hero:
    Spec: https://wotlkdb.com/?talent#j0EGoI0c...ht0bxoz:odb0cV
In case you find slow from Desecration really helpful, you can remove a point from Endless Winter and max out Desecration: https://wotlkdb.com/?talent#j0EGoI0c...ht0bxbz:odb0cV
If you notice Death and Decay missing a lot, maybe going for extra Hit over Dodge might be a good idea.

Check all the talent builds and try to notice the "base" of all of them, aka core talents.
Veteran of the Third War for example, Improved Icy Touch and Toughness, etc...

Other talents like Mark of Blood, Heart Strike, Bloody Strikes, Lichbourne vs 1/5 Black Ice (in Frost DW talents), Scent of Blood, Icy Reach vs Nerves of Cold Steel vs Killing Machine (in Blood DW talents, depending on how much hit you are missing on melee, if any), are optional and wont affect you or your gameplay almost at all.

When Dual Wielding (Frost), Threat of Thassarian wont make any difference, it is plain waste of 3 talents.
Off hand hits are not doing any damage to make Rune Strike do extra threat that will matter, and Death Strike wont heal you twice even your off hand hit as well.

You can make some personal changes also, but make sure the core valuable talents for each spec are there.
Overall two handers are better options for tanking, especially on fights like Sindragosa and Halion where getting parried multiple times while DWing will get u killed.

  3. Nice guide. Surprisingly I have been doing something nearly identical to Blood-more avoidance with my DK tank and it's my first time playing the class :D Good to know I was on the right track. The part about getting death runes up for Icy touch is new to me. never though of doing that, so I was motly relying ting on getting a Death an Decay off, in order to build up sufficient aggro, then using Death Grip and two ice runes or in emergency Tauren War Stomp for the stragglers.

Just a suggestion: Can you explain what the glyphs do?

  4. why not mark of blood in blood dk spec.
    Edited: March 15, 2017

  5. I guess reading Glyphs will explain what they do... xD
Going for Glyph of Dark Command is so u never miss a taunt.
Going for Glyph of Disease is so u can keep ur Diseases on the target (mainly Blood Plague) and spam more Death Strikes. If u get this glyph u can use Blood Rune to refresh Blood Plague, use Frost and Unholy runes for Death Strike for selfhealing, use Death Runes for Icy Touch spam for more aggro. On top of that, there is no other glyph that will give u something like this so yea...
Glyph of UA and Glyph of VT are there to maximise the value of ur Defencive CDs.
When it coems to Mark of Blood u can go for it for the cost of Scent of Blood or Bloody Strikes. I personaly consider Mark of Blood a waste of a talent point. Reason for that is simple: 3min CD for 4% Healing is nothing. Basicly if u cast Mark of Blood on Lich King for example, and he casts Infest, u will lose all of MoB stacks and those 4% wont matter at all. Even if they do matter and get someone out of range of Infest (90%+ HP), LK casts like 10 Infests and u can cast MoB every 3min, so yea...
If u like this talent be my guest and take it, both Scent and Strikes are useless on their own way aswell, just make sure u STOP specing into Blood Tree after u get 3/3 Will of the Necropolis.
DO NOT SPEC Heart Strike. NO, it WONT give u any extra Threat compared to Blood Strike. NO it DOES NOT HAVE AOE aggro potential, using Blood Boil is more efficient. NO, just NO.
DO NOT SPEC into Epidemic. AGAIN, ICY TOUCH makes more threat than all ur other spells combined. Using that one Blood Rune for Pestilence instead of Blood Strike/Blood Boil wont hurt ur Threat AT ALL.
U have many great talent points u can get, and few talent points overall. Dont waste them.

  6. Why you didn't say about def? Should i get 540 before everything else?
And I have a problem: when I pull a pack in hc dungeons with IT then do PS and then Pesti at the same time other mobs from this pack aggro(because they didn't receive any dmg yet) on dps and healer. How to pull all of them at once?
    Edited: March 27, 2017

  7. My bad, completely forgot about that cap. Will add 540def rating as cap in stat section soon...
But as i said, guude is beeing edited. I was focused on Fdk and Udk DPS guides, and since i have almost no free time irl nowadayd duo to work (and no PC) im doin that **** via phone and its aids (thats why its slow).
But overall i plan to add the early gamr part and aoe rotation.

When it comes to tanking in dungeons u should never do that.
There are two ways of pulling trash.

    1st way, if u have 2 blood 2 frost 2 unholy runes:
DND > IT on 1st mob > PS on 2nd mob > BB > Rune Strike (or Frost Strike) on the mob that u have least amount of threat (if u are using my dungeon hero spec)
After that IT on the mobs that u didnt do IT alrdy, PS on the mob that u did first IT and u can double BB or Pesti...

2nd way, If u have Death Runes:
IT every mob u can, do not do double IT on one mob, and in case u have 1 blood and 1 unholy rune pop DnD. Otherwise use all 6 Death Runes for IT spam. In case u did IT on every mob u are facing and u still have runes u can use for IT, do it again from 1st to last mob...

Always be ready to taunt cos it doesnt matter how good u are as DK tank when it comes to AoE aggro at Warmane. If u are not getting MDed u will lose aggro. Practice that taunt reflex and be fast...

More and detailed info will come when i make time to edit this guide. For now make sure.to have proper talents and to use proper spells and def cooldowns when needed. Try to find rotation urself...

  8. Dont tank as Unholy. NEVER when it comes to end game raiding! Unless u want to have some fun…
    *squints eyes*

  9. When Ulduar patch was live maybe, now: still no. :D

There will be a time when u wont have Icebound Fortitude, Vampiric Blood, Bone Shield, Unbreakable Armor a d EVERY deffencive will be on CD. Than what?
    Will of the Necropolis.

On top of that as Unholy u cant get the basic talents for tanking if u want to get that Ebon Plague 3/3, so thats another downside of that spec.

Overall conclusion about unholy tank: nope. :D

  10. You're right, I almost forgot that between 3.1.2 and 3.3.5 Blood got nerfed and Unholy got buffed!
Oh wait, you didn't know that, did you?
I guess I may as well link patch notes to you since you'll be too lazy to find any facts to back up your argument and insist that you're right "because reasons".
    http://wow.gamepedia.com/Patch_3.1.3
[Frost Presence]: Armor bonus is now 60% down from 80%.

    http://wow.gamepedia.com/Patch_3.2.0
[Bloody Strikes]: This talent now provides 5/10/15% increased damage to [Blood Strike] instead of 15/30/45%.
[Dancing Rune Weapon]: This ability now has a fixed duration of 12 seconds (which can still be modified by its glyph) and a fixed cost of 60 runic power.
[Veteran of the Third War]: Stamina bonus reduced to 1/2/3%.

[Desolation]: New talent. This talent is in the position formerly occupied by Desecration. It causes Blood Strikes to increase all damage the death knight deals by 1/2/3/4/5% for 12 seconds.
[Scourge Strike]: Weapon damage bonus reduced to 40%, down from 45%. Damage increased by 10% per disease on the target, down from 11%.
[Unholy Blight]: This talent has been redesigned. It no longer deals damage to nearby targets. Instead, when you deal damage with Death Coil, the target will take periodic damage for 10 seconds equal to 20% of the damage done by Death Coil. This damage accumulates in the same way as Ignite and Deep Wounds.

    http://wow.gamepedia.com/Patch_3.2.2
[Heart Strike]: Secondary targets of Heart Strike now take half as much damage.
[Subversion]: Now also increases the critical strike chance of [Scourge Strike] by 3/6/9%.
[Vampiric Blood]: Cooldown reduced to 1 minute and duration reduced to 10 seconds.

[Bone Shield]: This ability now has 3 charges instead of 4. Cooldown reduced to 1 minute.
[Dirge]: This talent no longer grants additional runic power from using [Obliterate].
[Gnaw]: This death knight ghoul ability now has a 1-minute cooldown.

    http://wow.gamepedia.com/Patch_3.3.0
[Army of the Dead]: The cooldown on this ability has been reduced from 20 minutes to 10 minutes. Army Ghoul damage dropped by 50%. Cannot be used in Arenas.
[Night of the Dead]: Now reduces the damage your pet takes from area-of-effect damage by 45/90%, but no longer applies to area-of-effect damage caused by other players. In addition, this talent now reduces the cooldown of Army of the Dead by 2/4 minutes, down from 5/10 minutes.
[Scourge Strike]: Redesigned. The base ability now deals 50% weapon damage plus an additional amount as physical damage. However, for each disease the death knight has on the target, the target will take additional shadow damage equal to 25% of the physical damage done.
[Unholy Blight]: This talent now deals only 10% of [Death Coil] damage as a damage-over-time effect on the target.

    http://wow.gamepedia.com/Patch_3.3.3
[Abomination's Might]: This effect is now passive instead of being a proc on certain strikes. Rank 1 is 5% attack power and Rank 2 is 10% attack power. The self strength buff remains unchanged.
[Will of the Necropolis]: There is no longer a cooldown on the frequency at which this talent can be activated. In addition, this ability can now also be triggered by damage which deals less than 5% of your health.

[Scourge Strike]: Now deals 70% weapon damage, plus 12% of physical damage done as shadow damage for each of the death knight's diseases on the target. The net result should be larger strikes with no diseases present, while maximum damage with all diseases applied to the target should stay the same.

    Funny guy!

  11. Most of these changes (if not all) are effecting DPS more than tanking.
DK tank overall lost Armor duo to Frost Presence nerf.
Blood lost 3% of max stamina and gained no cooldown on Will of Necropolis (so it practicly got buffed).
Unholy lost 1 charge on Bone Shield.

U lose most of great tanking low and mid tear talents of every tree in order to reach Ebon Plaguebringer. Other than that, there is not a single one defencive talent in Unholy Tree exept Bone Shield, and Anty Magic Zone which is basicly a 2min CD for 1 spell apsorb aka crap.

The only thing u can do is to stop specing in Unholy talent tree as soon as u reach Bone Shield and 1/3 Crypt Fever (for extra DS healing), in order to get Veteran of Third War and 8 talent points in Frost. But even so, as soon as u lose both Bone Shield and Icebound u are basicly a DPS in tank gear since u have no passive defencives...

If u want to play it for fun do it. It simply isnt as good as Bloof when it comes to ICC tanking.
