Point of Fishing

Is it possible to get something else than fish when you go fishing? Or is it just a pointless profession?

As far as I remember, you need a high skill on fishing in order to fight the 2nd boss on SSC (The Lurker Below).

Not to mention, fish can be used to level up your cooking, and sometimes fishing can give your boxes that usually contain ores, leathers, cloth.
