If you're new to the server and don't have any way of acquiring gold...
Grab Skinning and Mining immediately at level 5. I'm level 49 now on Lordaeron, I have 4 20 slot bags (got those at level 30) and about 500g so far. All because of those two gathering proffs.
All production proffs really depend on what kind of character you make.
FIRST CHARACTER - SKINNING AND MINING, DROP ONE AND GET IT'S PARTNER AT 80 (Skinning and LW, Mining and JC)
Mage - Tailoring and Enchanting (able to sell Moonshroud etc, plus great cloak enchant and leg enchants)
Shaman - Skinning and LW
Hunter - Skinning and LW
Priest - Tailoring and Enchanting
Rogue - Mining and Engineering
Warlock - Tailoring and Enchanting
Druid - Skinning and Leathworking
Paladin - Blacksmithing and Jewelcrafting
Warrior - Blacksmithing and Jewelcrafting
Death Knight - Blacksmithing and Jewelcrafting
All professions listed above to their respective classes not only support the chosen class greatly, but will also help the economy.
There is no "best profession for your class". All those paladin guides that tell you to go Miner + Blacksmith...
Classes and builds only matter for gathering professions and loot collector playstyle. Example: playing a resto druid won't be as effective as a feral for skinning or collecting cloth. If you're sitting in town and crafting, you shouldn't really care what class you are. For crafting professions consider the endgame materials. You should be able to farm them or buy them cheap.
So the best professions are the best moneymakers. You can afford to buy cheap cloth/ leather/ gems/ metal etc. once you have some spare gold. Don't go simply "Skinning + LW" or "Tailoring + Enchanting". Gathering professions that only supply yourself are a waste of time in the end.
So you have two options:
- play as a gatherer - it requires more time but provides decent and steady (predictable) profit; doesn't require initial investment
- play as a crafter - either ask people to bring you materials and only charge for the crafting, or keep an eye on the AH for cheap materials
But i personaly dont find 2 gathering profs fun, crafting is more fun. But beside that i wanted to make a statistical report of the server which shows the players' profs so people can see which one is few and in demand, that way everything would be easier for us all.
Well the most profitable gathering profession seems Skinning - just because you can farm in some small area with greater uptime and less competition. You can't really force metal nodes or herbs to respawn.
For crafting, there are always a lot of blacksmiths and leatherworkers, so usually the best moneymaking professions include Enchanting, Inscription and especially Alchemy if you can afford to buy the herbs. It produces consumables and will always be in demand.
