Hunter Pets despawning and no longer with me, does this happen to anyone else?

For the second time today my pets have despawned in the middle of combat for no reason. When I try to call them back the game says "You do not have a pet" and I lose them forever and have to tame another beast. Has this happened for anyone else? How did you solve the problem? I have tried to log in/log out several times to no avail.
