Now that crossrealm is up and running, and it's great, IMO.

How about adding the free gear that blackrock players get, buyable for points on Icecrown?

Nope, same reason as Lordaeron doesn't have it.
If you wan't instant and free gear there's Blackrock for it, if you want to have your own character built from nothing you get that on Icecrown/Lordaeron. Icecrown at least has some items to skip green trinkets/weapons instantly.

In my opinion the junction of the realms unbalanced the bgs.
It is not only for the unfair fact that in blackrock players start full relentless, against players who are still equipping themselves in the other realms, but for the facility that the realm players can change faction.
A player who enters the bg and feels that the other faction is stronger, simply makes another char in that faction and unbalances the matches even more.
