Molten Core Bug?

We went inside molten core and the moment we killed the first fire elemental it started spawning more and more miniature ones untill all of our fps dropped to 2-3 fps (on an RTX2060).

Yeah it gets bugged sometimes. Kill the "big" fire ones as fast as possible because they spawn the small ones. Then try to AoE down the small ones because they also spawn more small ones as far as I could tell. If all else fails, run to the raid exit. Once you exit they will stay on the spot they were when you left so you can move around them this way because of the small aggro range - lvl 60 to lvl 80.
