1. Best diesel engine oil viscosity for winter?

I've got a 3.0 Isuzu Rodeo Denver and I need to change the oil next month. Should I go for 5w30 in case the weather gets around -20 celcius or lower (also thinner oil's gonna be good for the turbine when cold) and replace it with 10w40 when the weather warms up around march or will 10w40 get me through winter?

  2. It would get your trough winter, tough depends on expected mileage and weather, if it's constantly in minus.

I'd say if you expect high mileage(oil change due during/after winter) and constant minus 20, go for thinner.
If it's purely about worry of damage due to thicker oil on that one day each month when its minus and you will just dump good oil in spring due low use, stay on more "universal" oil.

Also, check users manual, people who built the damn thing know best, maybe there is something specific about that model.
