WotLK Coin/gold trading allowed?

I frequently see people selling coins or gold for money in global chat. I was wondering if this activity is legal? is it allowed to buy coins from others than warmane?

Im curious since the rates seem to be better from private traders. But my gut feeling tells me they are probably scamming, or that maybe its a bannable transaction.

I hope one of you can help me clear this up.
