How do I win the Strangelthorn Fishing Extravaganza?

Hi folks, so on Sunday I tried for the first time to compete in the fishing tournament in STV. But I wasn't aware that so many people would compete in it. I was finished fishing my 40 Tastyfish in just about 25 minutes after dealing with other players from both factions and the occasional ganking from one or two. But after I HS-ed to Booty Bay I was already too late and the winners were already announced.
So my question is: Do you have any tips how I could make it in the top 5 in time and win the tournament?
BTW I am grinding the Salty title.

Does this have more winners than STV? I also turned in 40 fish at 28 mins but it seems you just cannot win this without both sides helping you with ganking.
