Can't socket my items.. why?

Forgive if I'm being a noob here. Recently hit 80 and now trying to gear up. Some of my newer pieces of gear have socket bonuses for stam and such. However, when I drag gems from my backpack into the socket nothing happens no error or anything. It's the correct colour gem for the socket, I've bought different variants of the gems in colour, tried unloading all my addons tried reloading the client. Even went a step further and tried it on another PC with a fresh client install. I also read somewhere that it may not work if the item is equipped, so I move to my backpack and still the same issue.

Do you press big red button "socket gems" in bottom of item window?

it's greyed out, as i cant even equip the gems in the sockets :(

So, what happens when you put the gem into socket, it jumps back to bag or "Socket item" button stays grey?

If the gem is like this: http://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=36919 it needs to be cut to make something like this: http://wotlk.cavernoftime.com/item=40111. Only gems with some kind of stat can be placed in a socket.

Note: Socket color doesn't need to match gem's color (you may only lose the socket bonus, which always isn't worth going for). Pretty much only thing you need to match with gems is meta gem to Head item's meta gem slot, and meta gem's requirements for it to activate. Something like "Requires at least 2 blue gems, Requires at least 1 red gem".

I think you are right guys the gems are not cut like you say, its not very clear is it because the auctions house shows red blue yellow gems in the categories and the socket just says requires this colour gem haha. Nightmare
