I have been playing wow (on and off sadly) for years, but there are things I still don't understand. Right now, I play on the expansion I was started on (wotlk) and I have one level 80. What I don't understand is how to get heroic gear and gear scores. I die so easily on my main. I am playing a druid (can't remember which aspect I chose. I'd have to look.) I feel pretty pathetic asking for help so I don't need your hate. I'm only looking for help.
Without knowing a little more information on how you're dying etc.. it's hard to tell what the problem is.
Druids are a unique class capable of healing, dealing damage and tanking.
Like all classes they have various abilities that can be used in "oh ****" moments when you're getting nuked (bear form, survival instincts, barkskin etc) so it may be best to learn/fully utilize these abilities.
Heroic gear takes time to gather, endless RDF emblem farming followed by FOS/POS farms can be boring but they're the best bet to start with.
If you gave me some more info on your spec and stats and stuff I'll try to help you out, if not below is a link to some guides here on the forums if you feel like checking them out, they'll give you a good insight into the class and each spec, and how to start off gearing, and the progression that follows.

I feel it'd be easier for you to get a grasp on how Gear Score works by looking how newer expansions like Cata and Mob where Blizzard took the idea of Gear Score and just programmed it into WoW. Basically what GS is is an Item Level that which is what newer expansions use and what basically what that means is that all Gear is weighted by the stats on it. AS you PvE you'll notice some gear has higher stats, especailly moving from Normals, to Heroics, into Naxx > Uldaur > ToC > ICC. Gear Score is a form of progression where your personal level no longer goes up, but your gear quality can improve.
How do you know which gear stats is best for you? Well hopefully you get the point of Intel, Strength, and Agility, but as far as the rest goes you'll probably have to do a little research and figure out what works best for your class and as you see loot drop, it doesn't nessicarily mean it's better then what you have on (and i feel this is something new players struggle to understand).
IE: Spirit on gear will almost most often get handed off to your healer, but I have seen plenty of mages, lock, etc try and roll on Spirit gear and i'm not saying Spirit gear isn't a upgrade to a nasty blue or a bad purple, but if the stats on the gear are better for one class/spec it should be weighted with the raid and make sure that if it's someone's BiS (Best in Slot) it should go to them first before being handed off to someone that might not use it to it's full potential.
Now how to get started at 80 is pretty easy from an experienced PoV, if you do as many quest as i can in Ice Crown and get your rep up with some factions you can start replacing Greens with Blues pretty face and I can't count the many many times I have told new players to level their professions. One of the best ways to get some great new gear going is by crafting, now if you're really great at gold farming you can buy craft gear off the AH, if not as you are a Druid Leather Working would be a great profession for you to start on and get that maxed out.
Yes it might take some hard work and effort, but often the longer harder road is rewarded with jewels and gold. Basically if take your left over crafted mats and sell them on the AH you can easily make some fast cash as you level your professions and as you get to endgame crafting you can really make a lot of gold by selling crafted epics on the AH and have the Epic mount.....**** you're a druid, scratch that Epic Mount, bird boy. But you still have to buy trying and that's expensive.

Some of my gear is epic except for the neck which has "Pruning Pendant", Shoulder which has "Lasting Feralheart Spaulers", back which has "Injured Trapper's Cloak", hands which have "Awakened Handguards", finger one has "Signet of Arachnathid Command", finger two has "Spur Ring of Spirit", and my only trinket has "Insignia of Bloody Fire"
I think that should be good enough to work with. I can always look something up what you may need.

Hmm.. Have a lot of free time atm, so let me see with your questions :P
Firstly you can get heroic gear from heroic version of raids. Some raids have "normal" versions which are relatively easier to learn and play and "heroic" versions which are a bit more difficult. Gearscore is just an indicator of the "power" of the gear you are using, however gearscore is not an actual indicator of how good the gear is for you.
In a normal dungeon or raid environment, there are 3 classes, DPS, tank and healer. The bosses/adds hit for a lot of damage which the tank (ideally) takes, tank uses gear with lots of health and armor to be able to take a lot of damage, however, the tank can't survive forever, so a healer's job is to heal the tank while the DPS people actually kill stuff.
The spec you have chosen, Feral Combat, which can be a meele dps spec or a tank spec. Druids have other two specs, which can make you a ranged DPS or a healer too. Since you are new to the game, I would recommend trying DPS, instead of tank which requires more general awareness. Your gear is mostly wrong for feral dps, the primary stat you should be focusing on is agility (for now until you learn the other stats in detail). Here is where gearscore comes into play, for instance you may have this gear (http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=51851) or (http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=47954). Now the first item is heroic and has more "gearscore" but the second item is superior because it has stats that you need as a feral druid (agility, attack power, etc). The first item is simply for other classes, so you should focus more on proper itemization than on gearscore.
The normal way to start is to do quests in icecrown and other high level areas until you get some gear and then move to forge of souls and pit of saron dungeons, commonly referred to as fos/pos which gives decent 219/232 ilvl gear which can help you get geared for raids.
