Can someone explain multiboxing?

Why is it done? How is it done? Why is it allowed? I personally have never came across one, or not that I have noticed, but I sure do read a lot about it on forums and it has piqued my interest as of late. On paper it sounds extremely unfair and I can't really think of why you would do it if not to gain an unfair advantage. I can only imagine some guy getting destroyed in wPvP, logs on their 80, gets destroyed again, then multiboxes 5 80s cause they can't hang in a normal 1v1.
I realize my initial outlook on multiboxing comes off as negative but what I am hoping with this thread is that someone will provide me some insight and possibly change my view. I just can't come up with any positives at the moment or even come to understand why it is allowed.

Blizzard allows it because it generates extra money, Warmane follows the same reason and to not loose players, people do it to gain advantage, it is done by specific programs

It doesn't look like fun to me.. But to each their own. I would prefer to achieve dominance with a single character.

Nevertheless its comprehensible that it looks like fun for some ppl isnt it?

Its more then 5vs1 cuz people cant 1vs1.
I multibox on Lord for instance.And when it comes to pvp i really have alot of exp with multiclass above 2.5k warmane (2.7 retail).
The reason behind Multibox is fun.Fun to own people.Fun to solo instance.Fun to make more gold since i dont have entire day for farming.
Etc.

For me it's the challenge.

Doing 10mans is harder than people think if you are at the appropriate gear level for the raids you are doing.

I'm a firm believer in, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence" (R.I>P Christopher Hitchens), but also I do believe in taking things with a grain of salt. What I'm saying my friend is, I don't think it's unreasonable to believe that money is the primary reason why Blizzard allows Multiboxing, even though Blizzard has never officially came out and said, "hey we just want your money" I think it's perfectly fair to "assume" that with all the drama behind MB'ing over the years, if Blizzard wasn't making a buck off of Multiboxers alone, I think they would have done away with it long ago.

After all they did removed MB's from bg's in MoP, so it's pretty obvious that the only reason they really keep allowing it is because of money.

Well, there is only a handful of multiboxer left on retail and the money that Blizzard earns with them is only a drop in the ocean compared to the millions of normal subscribers.
I highly doubt that this small amount of extra cash is the reason why Blizzard allows multiboxing.

The majority of retail multiboxer quitted after follow was removed from BGs.
If multiboxing was such a big money source then blizzard would have never removed follow from BGs.

Btw, follow was removed from BGs to stop botting. Multiboxer just took the collateral damage.
Its still allowed to multibox in BGs by using alternative follow methods.

They removed boxing from bg's and in retail that was where the biggest complaints were back in the day, the difference now is like you said, some that do open world stuff and what's his face that loves to camp stormshield. They don't really have any more reasons to remove MB'ing now, they just sit on the money they rake in.

They say botting, but it was for boxing to. Not a lot of bots used /follow in bg's. It started as a big cash crap for Blizzard, now they just don't care. A sub is a sub so no reason to remove boxing anymore.

Let's assume mboxing was allowed just because they pay more fees than normal players.
Botter usually own and pay for multiple accounts, too. If it wasn't the difference of who controlls the characters that makes botting bannable and mboxing not, I wouldn't be able to see why one is allowed while the other isn't. Furthermore, botters are people who do not even cry on any forum about the quality of the game becoming worse. They do not argue with players ingame, yell or insult them. They 'play' (well, I mean bot) on their own without wanting to get any attention. Ofcourse people may cry about botters, but they also do about mboxers.

If they would allow mboxing just for the money, why wouldn't they allow botting just for the money, too? When I'm thinking about it, if I just wanted the money, I'd even prefer the botters to normal players (assuming the lack of players in the future won't cause less botters, too).

No. They said it was for botting and that they were okay with multiboxers taking the hit with botters. Fairly soon they also allowed the use of oFollow addon which gives multiboxers the ability to use follow in bgs. Saying that they removed follow because of boxers is just lies.
