Issue with quest "Shu, the Spirit of Water" - cannot interact w/ stepping stones

[SOLVED: I found a way around the stepping-stones. You can hop on the perimeter wall and follow it around.]

Just started out on this neat server with a friend but we can't get past this certain required quest chain.

The swirling circles that are supposed to transport you to Shu instead just leave me levitating in place at the first one.

Any reason why this might happen? Is there any way around this?
