Leveling gear

Okay so I'm levelling an orc hunter. I'm following a levelling guide for 7x xp realms, it tells me to go to Barrens. I am their and the mobs are level 11, I am level 10. I can hardly kill these mobs because my gear is rubbish and my character hardly has any money to buy any gear from the AH. Is there a solution to this, I can't get heirloom for my hunter because my main is listed up for trading for 7 days. Does anyone have any ideas how I can fix up my gear or is their a way to at least get a heirloom weapon which levels up with me and I can finally kill mobs.
