tailoring question

I am a warlock with tailoring and I was wondering if I really need tailoring to get good endgame gear. I remember the spellstrike gear from when I played in retail but I think that stuff can be worn by non tailors. I was thinking I should go engineering for the goggles and just buy my tailoring pieces. Are there gears that I can't wear if I am not tailor? i know tailoring has perks like making the cloth needed but is the gear BOP? any responses are appreciated. thanks!

there are 3 tailoring specializations in TBC that give BoP 3 piece sets:

Shadow weave - frost/shadow dmg

Spell fire - fire/arcane dmg

Moon cloth - healing

all 3 sets are incredibly strong for t4+ and none of the slots overlap with the BoE spelltstrike/whitemend tailoring sets
