Basically, how easy is it to trade a character for coins.

Very difficult. Easier for classes with SM (war, dk, pala) than others. Even spamming in global for weeks, I have yet to sell my bis hunter.
My experience says that characters with 3, 4 BoEs equipped, epic flying, dual spec and some profs are sold fastest, for 30 coins. I'm sitting on my warrior and DK still tho.
Can't speak of BiS characters 'cause my best char is 6.2k retri which none seems interested in for like millenias (156 coins).
