Yeah, I have 100 mounts achievement and I never bought a single mount on Auctionhouse.
You get reputation from different factions to buy their mounts, Like Orgrimmar for Wolfs, Taurens for Kodos etc,
There's even some factions in TBC you can farm to get mounts that can be obtainable by both factions.
Glory Achievements gives mounts, There's 5 different (was 7 but blizz removed some) There's mounts that drops on bosses like Zul gurub or Tempest Keep.
There's mounts from Eggs in the "Oracle" tribe in sholazar, and various other items.
Also some bosses in Hardmode or heroic drops mount like Yogg Saron Hardmode OR Lich King Heroic.
