New to the game, got called out for being a ninja on a dungeon?

Hello guys!

I'm super new to the game (name's Bauduco a friendly Orc Death Knight on Icecrown) never played wow before and even less to the extent of its endgame content. Yesterday I did a FOS run as a DPS and the boss that gives the mirror skill (where everyone should stop doing damage) dropped a plate boot that was an upgrade on every stat for me, more armor more strength more stamina and so on.

When I saw the item it was a no brainer for me, I "need it" and people got mad because It was a tank item, and I shouldn't have it. I ended with the highest roll and equipped the item. The party got really mad at me and said they were gonna report and ban me (I tried talking this through and even said that I was open to do as many runs as necessary to drop it for the tank dude). Of course the party disbanded.

Was I in the wrong? Don't really care if I get banned, while it's being really fun I'm a casual player and getting banned is not the end of the world for me, but I'm curious if I should be more aware on what I "need" on these runs.

If you are not the tank you may not roll need on tank items even if they are an upgrade.

What puts an item on the TANK section and not DPS section? I'm new to the game and more than willing to learn stuff, as it is needed on endgame content. The item gave me and upgrade on stats that are relevant to my class, isn't that enough? If I'm not supposed to have this item, shouldn't the game not allow me to "need it?

Defense and parry items are for tank, no matter how stats gives you upgrade, that item isnt for dps

Crit, haste, armor penetration are also relevant for your role. The secondary stats the item gave were parry/dodge/block/defense - those are tank stats. I recommend you read a guide about your class and learn it better to avoid such situations in the future.

@Thorbjorn thanks for providing some information to enlighten me, will be more cautious with the items I "need" ingame. From all the above answers yes, I shouldn't have that item. Oh well, lesson learned.

Kinda bothered that people come and say "I think you can clearly tell which one is tank and which one is dps" if it was this obvious I wouldn't waste time on a forum asking :(

If you see stats such as defense, parry, or dodge then it's a tank item.
