I'd like to play in fullscreen mode (where I can adjust the gamma level) without the game crashing onto the taskbar and then only being able to turn off the game with Task Manager. Is there a solution?

Yes.
1. Make sure your graphics card driver is in good order. Download the latest available driver for it -> clean the old one with Display Driver Uninstaller -> install the new one.
2. Make sure you start with a clean client and the game folder is not Read-only.
