It appears the top pvp teams choose female characters. Is this because they have smaller hit boxes (perhaps making it easier to hide behind things or run away) and/or are harder for an opponent to click/mouse-over?
Or is it just an aesthetic preference?

As a guy who has to stare at a rear-end for hours at a time, I prefer it to be a female one, my main is female but most alts are male.
