How can I configure my client so I can write Chinese characters?

It must be possible, because I see spammers using hanzi in chat. However, whether I use the data/EnGB or the data/ZhCN folder, I cannot *write* chinese when I switch language on my operating system (I play on both Ubuntu and Windows 10 on different pcs and on both I use a hotkey to switch keyboard configuration.) In the zhcn client I can read it just fine and even have all the maps and voices. But what do I need to do to type those characters? When I try it, my pinyin suggestions are all "1. ????, 2. ?????" etc.

I have searched the forum and found other people with similar problems but no solutions that hit the mark.

Hello future forum searching friends... If you are also on Linux and you want to write characters from a different locale than your system, try a command like this:

LANG="zh_CN.UTF8" wine Wow.exe

This has allowed me to write Chinese characters in chat. I am sure it will work for other scripts the game supports like Japanese, Russian, or Korean.
