is there any risk in using vpn?

i have been unable to log in icecrown for a few months unless i use my phones internet which is bad and annoying
and i don't have any premium vpn so i was wondering if there is any risk in using free vpn and by risk i mean losing my acc/ getting permanently banned or something

Risk is high. Don't use free VPN.
Also, if something is free, you are the merchandise.

I would not use a VPN, I had problems with an account after accidentally logging in with Proton VPN enabled.
While I could still login and play, I always got a warning when logging into the website saying this IP was banned.
Until the IP ban was lifted, I could not spend vote points.

You wouldn't be permanently banned for using one, but a lot of VPNs (probably all free ones by now) have been abused by bots, advertisers and others, being banned in the server. You say yours is a paid one, so you could test it with a different account to see if the VPN you use has been blocked too or not.
