Hello.
I have tanked for a bit with prot pala and dk but never started tanking as warrior since everyone is saying that it's just simply the worst, that it dies a lot, generates no threat and deals no damage and is always in D tier in tier lists . I tried out the class simulators and it seems that prot warriors and prot paladins are not that dissimilar.
So my question is: why is prot warrior thought to be the worst tank?
And: Is it worth leveling and grinding prot warrior?

If you play on Icecrown, you can tank everything with one of the four tanking classes of your choice...
If you play on Lordaeron, where the pve content is way harder, protection paladins and blood death knights are usually the most common tanks, with few exceptions (a LOD guild in Lordaeron used to have a feral druid tank). In that realm, protection warriors play only niche roles, tanking adds on Halion 25HC and Anub Arak 25 HC (in this case, with a specific gear build, focused on block value and avoidance).
Protection paladins and blood death knights simply bring more utilities to the table: divine sacrifice, ardent defender (the best passive skill of the entire game), greater blessing of sanctuary (even if is overrun by the discipline priests), hand of freedom, hand of salvation, hand of sacrifice, hand of protection, hysteria, abomination's might (which may be overrun by hunter's aura), icy talons (increasing melee haste). Just by replacing the blood death knight with a feral druid, you would need to replace a fury warrior with a frost death knight or an enhancement shaman to ensure the melee haste buff. On a realm where everything is min - maxed, you don't want that.
Last but not least, protection paladins and blood death knights are way easier to play.
Just spam Icy Touch, my friend, and nobody will ever steal your aggro.
No even in Lord you can tank all. The fourth bosses until saucroc is really good for war tank (and for training basic tank mecanic).Quote:

You can tank it all on lordaeron. It's just dumb to use a protwarr. Especially on add-heavy fights like ldw, vdw and lk and spiky-damage fights like sindra and even bpc.Quote:

Prot/Blood is played due to how they complement a raid and how they work in certain encounters. Not because there's no players knowing how a protwarrior works since it's also playable by a chimpanzee. Wotlk pve doesn't really get much further than pushing four buttons to work at 99% efficiency on any class.Quote:

Stuns from protwarr are next to useless and not even a unique benefit. Paladin has HoJ and Holy Wrath which is basically the same considering 99% of stuff in icc is undead.
And if you feel like it - even on lordaeron solo tank bane has been done with a protwarr. Should be easy to find even on youtube. Mostly for the memes though.
Do you also think there's people too dumb to play ele shaman and that's the reason nobody wants them anyway despite them bringing like 12 non-unique buffs? Maybe just tone down your ego and look at arguments properly for once.

You are the one who said war tank can be played by monkeys. You said they are useless cuz bring nothing and not meta but in the same time you said war tank in lord clear all. I just don't understand this logic.
If I ask you to show me you tanking as war tank. It's because everytime when this subject pop out, they are troll or players who don't event play them who come to just said they suck . I'm amaze by that eveyone know war tank but I saw almost none, event in rhc.

A Protection Warrior is an alright Tank who can do the job, but the other classes are just better at it. That's what makes it the worst - not bad, but worse than the others. Unless you are doing old content or outgear the content you will be doing, chances that someone will pick your Protection Warrior are reduced, because taking one is essentially handicapping the group. No one will care that you say you can do it or show achievements that you can do it, because people will prefer the better option for harder content. Maybe if you're the raid leader organizing a group or if it's a guild run re-doing content they have completed before, but in general you will have a harder time because there are other Tanks who just do it better and/or add more to the group than your Protection Warrior.
So play whatever you want, just do it aware of what you're getting into. You don't get to complain later that people don't want you as their Tank. That's all people have tried to say.
No ret will ever spec for Divine Sacrifice, which is way more useful than any of the minimal advantage you have listed.Quote:

As Blind has already said, dropping few gcd to stack and refresh Sunder Armor is trivial to any fury warrior with some decent experience on the game, especially considering the few holes in the rotation you can fill with SA.
And finally, Ardent Defender can't be compared to any other skill in the game, especially if you are still progressing through the content.
Since this game is 15 years old, many players have achieved high goals, like tanking LOD or BANE with a protection warrior, or setting new LOD records with a dps roster made only by fire mages.
But if you are willing to join pug raids, you can't expect other players to accomodate to your preferences, unless you are the raid/guild leader (and still, you would have trouble finding players willing to join).
Dungeons are not even relevant. Nobody would kick you from a RDF HC just because you are playing a protection warrior, unless you are very bad. Not to mention that a protection warrior geared with a lot of armor penetration items (but still defense capped) can easily carry you trough any heroic dungeon, with tones of aoe treath and damage.
Prot Warrior is fine, it's just harder to play than the other specs and ppl like to get carried (usually for free).
