Moving your arms against gravity would be classified as an attempt to slow yourself, to push against gravity and not reach terminal velocity. It's a perfectly reasonable (if pointless) instinct, even if human limbs have not adapted for it to actually work.
Bottom line, it's instinctive and you would do that too given the same situation.
Perhaps my brain just evolved past bird-level, while others' haven't.
Perhaps some people would have the "instinct" of clenching their teeth when someone is about to shoot them in the mouth pointblank - for "protection", of course. I'm comfortable not being among those.
