There's a huge difference between spasms in reflex from choking - which are pretty much instinctive - and trying to turn into a humming bird while gravity is laughing at your face - which really shouldn't be among the instincts of regular human beings.

Moving your arms against gravity would be classified as an attempt to slow yourself, to push against gravity and not reach terminal velocity. It's a perfectly reasonable (if pointless) instinct, even if human limbs have not adapted for it to actually work.

Bottom line, it's instinctive and you would do that too given the same situation.

Perhaps my brain just evolved past bird-level, while others' haven't.

Perhaps some people would have the "instinct" of clenching their teeth when someone is about to shoot them in the mouth pointblank - for "protection", of course. I'm comfortable not being among those.

You make it sound as if you are speaking from experience, which is unlikely as dead people tend to not use the forums.
You can't say what you would and wouldn't do until you've actually been in that situation.

Neither can you or others dictate what I would do if I had actually been in that situation.
Although, granted, I, out of everyone, have a slightly better shot at knowing myself and how I might react.
