Do classic players deliberately try to sabotage their own game?

I have never met more racist, toxic people online. I queue all kinds of toxic games like DoTA and Apex but none of them hold a candle to the types of losers I have met playing WoW. I seriously can't imagine spending every week bound to 24 of these people. It's almost exclusively 4chan NEET types who I have encountered so far. Obviously this can't be every person in the WoW community and yet I haven't met a single person who gives me the impression otherwise.

I'm genuinely curious what the appeal of this game even is because I always hear it's, "the social aspect". This doesn't really make sense to me because I only seem to run into anti-social losers with tiny penis and massive insecurity. I'm not even talking about the absolute cringefest going on 24/7 in STV or ganking in general because yes it's ****ing cringe but what else would I expect? My real concern is just the overall pissant attitude and completely insufferable way people treat each other on this game.

I'm not asking to get carried through the game or have people do **** for me, quite the contrary honestly. I just can't understand the appeal of a "social" game where the vast majority of people running around you would never want to socialize with in your ****ing life. I play games to relax not be stuck in circumstances I have no control over (surrounding myself with ****ters and concentrated negativity/pettiness). If I wanted to be depressed about the state of humanity I would just go on Twitter and avoid the extra window-dressing.

Content? Easy, relaxing, maybe even almost enjoyable. The people required to clear it? Absolute ****ing misery. I'm no fool, I don't wipe or **** up basic mechanics, and have no problem sacrificing some of my time to help out a guildie, etc. So what gives? Is WoW really so boring that the only way to make it fun is to ruin other people's mood? I really don't understand. Surely there has to be something to do in this game besides raidlogging and griefing??? I came here because my friend was excited for WoTLK and wanted to play with me because he knows I'm no clown. All I'm left with is confusion and the feeling that I'll be missing out on absolutely nothing if I choose not to play. There are tons of other things we could do together these days, I was mainly checking the game out just because of how excited he was.

You are playing a 13 year old game, of course everybody is jaded and short on patience.

Can you elaborate? 13 years just means endless time for optimization and plenty of opportunity to have achieved everything you wanted. With all of these experiences behind you, what exactly is the catch? With so much time to have accomplished your goals, what is there left that so desperately needs to be proven??

You would think this would breed confidence and self-assurance, not insecure behaviors and a desperate need to prove that you matter.

When I encounter somebody at the top of their field they do not lash out with insecurity. These types of people are already keenly aware of their own worth and capabilities. People like that have nothing to prove, especially to some faceless stranger.

On the flip I can see how 13 years raiding with these lovely individuals would make you a jaded ***.

Haven't played in a year or so but if things were like this when I left, I just expect they have become more extreme. The world has changed a lot in 13 years, way more than most believe. Also nostalgia is a dangerous feeling, you will never experience the same as you experienced 13 years ago, there are just too many external factors that have changed everything completely. I get your point, but I also think you're very naive if you don't see why this happened. Get an addon called ignore more and join a guild from your country, there might be some toxic elements within the guild but atleast you'll share some cultural traits that will make you feel comfortable.

The fact is, you create environment around you, you find people to play with. Don't be afraid, break the cycle, and the truth will be revealed - either you want people around so you can write 2 blankets about them, or you want people around to play a good game. First one is easy symbiotic relationship, second one is hard work.

It's an odd attitude that you have... Thinking that since people have been here for a long time, they are skilled and willing to teach others, and if they don't act nicely towards you it's because they are insecure losers with a tiny penis (all your words). You make several leaps of logic there.

After so many years, most people have moved on, and those who stick around or who can endure joining now despite the flaws that you have pointed out are simply "different".

There's only one thing YOU can change about all of this.

If you approach the game with a positive attitude, be willing to help people gear, answer questions, hell just be polite in groups it goes a long way toward enjoyment. If people start being toxic, take a step back and try to calm the situation, if you can't LEAVE.
The worst that will happen is you're locked out of a raid for a week or have to requeue for a dungeon in 30 minutes. The server is static so you can always raid again for that digital shiny loot or donate if you have to get it now.
Find a guild with people you can relate to, they are out there.

The only thing I've changed is I don't log onto warmane anymore and my mood is much better

Classic and private servers have become save heaven for everything that is generally unacceptable anymore in most games. There is zero moderation as well, so you would see pretty much any degeneration opinion that exist. I remember once global chat had discussion for a hour about if your wife don't wanna have sex with you, you should beat her into submission.

However there is really cool people as well, they are just really hard to find when there is see of *******s. I have met people here that i am friends with for many years and we still play other games together. You just need to put extra effort in finding like minded people and then stick with them. Also if you have thought " why am i playing" its indicator you should move on and play something else. At least thjat's my general advice.

people just don't like the fake facade nowdays, as if creating rules that forces people to pretend what they are not will somehow change the truth. There are as much scum in "most games" as here, as anywhere. Don't let the dystopian wet dream fool you.

Finding cool people are way easier here, you can see what is what quicker.

sadly, wow has always had a toxic element. I've often wondered the same thing as the OP - if you want the game to grow and survive, don't be a dick... but that idea seems to be lacking in others. I mostly play alone or with my kids, even on Live. Even in a guild it seems like you're just surrounded by teens and 20'something kids who share the maturity level of a 15-year-old in sex ed. Other than that, on a pvp server, sadly you're going to run into people whose real life must be so bad that they have to draw self-esteem by running around one-shooting lower-level players. They gain nothing, we lose nothing but time. You can't brag about it so really, it's just a modern version of pet torture.

When i start playing Classic i looked specifically for "boomer" guild and i found one. Majority of people there was 30+ with stable life and family and overall it was complete different vibe then usually. I am still there and even after i stop playing classic still play other games like FF or Lost Ark with part of the guild. My Warmane arena partner found his girlfriend there and now they are living together. Also in TBC classic we moved to PVE realm from PVP one, it was best decision i had ever made in WOW. My advice is to look for guilds that advertise as mature and more chill and you will have way better time, and yes they do exist on Warmane as well. The old expansions raid are overall pretty easy, so even if they are not the best players you will still clear everything.

The game have been on decline for last 10 years, the overall community toxicity fore sure play part of it.

Yup. Use it to your advantage. The in-game friend list is trash. It has a maximum size of 200 and is not shared between characters. Get discord or something else.

The problem is people sticking to the same old game even when they aren't really excited about it or have fun anymore.

After playing the same raids for a few years, the mechanics are embedded in your brain like riding a bike is.
Now you're riding your bike alongside newer players and they happen to f+++ up and fall down, bust a leg from time to time. Because it's a raid and we depend on each other, we all fall down. People have zero patience and hate busting a leg because some clown can't even ride a bike.
Riding a bike isn't even that much fun anymore, it's just a habbit now.

If you find yourself in that situation, just move on.

The flip side of that argument is there is pleasure to be had in doing things out of habit. It allows you to enjoy the other aspects of the same task, now that you can perform it with proficiency without devoting much mental effort to the basic mechanics. Or even just zoning out and entering into a flow state. It's akin to how driving/riding (even to nowhere) is calming and comforting to some, and you can't really enjoy the twisties until you have a good grasp on the basics anyway. There are those that will mock you when you fall, and there are also those who will pull you back onto your feet. With 12000 players active during peak hours, you will surely be able to find some like-minded people.
