WotLK The essential questions

Simply put:

1. Can shammys solo instances?
2. In bgs, how good are they?
3. Vs Hunters...?
4. Vs Pallys...?
5. Best profs?

1. Sure, not WotLK ones but certainly BC/Vanilla ones.

2. Varies. Shamans have very good PvP Presence, but shine mainly in arenas imo (resto). Elemental has pretty sick burst if you want to explode people in BGs.

3. Hunters are generally good against casters, but not if you melt his face first. You can earthbind/Thunderstorm him/his pets. You can hex him and kill his pet/root his pet and melt his face, and heal yourself. It's mostly up to how well you play mechanically.

4. Kiteable, and you can purge a lot of his buffs. If you get a Seal off of him it's a huge damage loss for him until he rebuffs himself. Roots/Instant Ghost Wolf/Frost Shock. This is assuming you're elemental, as you may have more problems fighting them melee as enhancement although your burst would still be strong.

5. I chose inscription, but Jewel Crafting will get you the best stats (3 Dragon's Eyes) as well as either tailoring (spellthreads) or leatherworking (leg armor). Blacksmithing will get you a few extra sockets.
