After struggling getting my account recovered (thank you, Arlequina!), I'm looking forward to playing some WoW again because I cba with the garbage that is called WoD.
I'm not so much a veteran to warmane, molten or AT but have played retail for a long time. Having played as a huge noob during wrath, played casually during cataclysm while finding a class that fits my tastes, started to get more serious during MoP to quitting in WoD (:D). I went from Hunter to DK in wrath (only got to 72 on my DK back then) to a mix of all classes in cataclysm (ended up liking rogue and hunter the best) to starting fresh as monk in MoP, quitting monk because of their horrible state to finally becoming semi-serious in PvP on monk/mage begin 5.2 and getting my first 2.2k in 5.3, I've got quite a history of classes behind me.
Now here's my dilemma. When I played on molten-wow I was keen on playing mage on wotlk. Never got really far because I wasn't used to the slow pace of getting gear. Now I'm having trouble deciding which version I want to play. Having checked around myself I see that MoP isn't doing too well with slow updates and even a realm dying. I loved my monk though and its playstyle, which is why I'm sad to read all the bad things about MoP.
I was thinking of either playing cataclysm or MoP. If I were to play cataclysm I'd probably try out hunter again since I loved how hunters played back in cataclysm, however I'd also love to play rogue again after having started playing one in WoD as well (sub, not combat). However I also want to try out wrath.
It's easy to just try all of them out but I still have some coins left on my account from donating. I'm aware rogue is really strong with certain items in cataclysm but I'm more interested in playing a hunter (are they viable at all in PvP?). The coins aren't useful in MoP because PvP gear is superior in the PvP that matters so I'd more or less be choosing between wrath (mage/rogue) or cataclysm (hunter/rogue).
So yeah, I wasn't sure where to put this topic at all so I put it in this section while introducing myself.
TL;DR: Not sure which WoW (most thriving with active 3s arenas) version to pick as well as what realm, since I want to commit to one while also wondering the viability of cataclysm hunters in PvP in combination with PvE gear.

3's arenas are pretty much forsaken on most realms... I think the best bet would be going for either Blackrock or Warsong for 3's arena (both instant max level PvP realms)
Also about MoP updates being slow, I don't know why everyone thinks so... but just take a look at all the changelogs and see what has been done. Also look at the time frame.

Hi bud. Hunter is pretty good on cata for PvP. Bm is the king for BG's but you can do really well in arenas with some skill and the right comp, MM is very decent too, but i just love BM. I really dont like MoP PvP right now, but is my opinion. If you like hunter you will enjoy Cataclysm more. But about 3s activity i cannot tell you how it is on Neltharion.
Warsong or Blackrock have only pvp system. with normal mode pve items. So you won't face any heroic paladin. It's quite fun play even 2s when you face same type gear not op people.
If you like more pve wrath/cata/mop other realms all the way but pvp in these realms broken.
Every class is fine if you master it. Some classes have minuses other pluses in pvp/pve. Depends on you how you pick play style. If you feel good in one class pick it :) no matter how it can be bugged try it. Everything is free here to try and explore.
They have seperate teams.
Team 1 works on WotLK
Team 2 works on Cata (have you ever seen Green_Dev work on another expansion? no.)
Team 3 works on MoP
Team 4 works on WoD
They are specialised. You can't just put Green_Dev on WotLK for example... or on WoD. It is not where his interest and experience is.
Morale of the story: The only thing they are dividing between expansions is the money. If they had unlimited money I am sure every expansion had more developers, but now they are not switching devs to have more on X expansion. WoD devs are just different people than the devs for other expansions.
Thanks for all the info. I tried to reply yesterday, but couldn't log on the forums for some reason although I could access account management.
I was wondering about how the wPvP is on certain realms? Is there any wPvP going on on the instant lvl 80/85 PvP servers (Blackrock/Warsong iirc)? Because even though PvP will be my main go-to activity, it'll be boring if the only thing there is to do is BGs and 2s. I kind of want a sort of feel of progression.
How popular/active are the PvE-PvP mixed realms of wrath and cata? Are they primarily PvE with some PvP on the side? Because I logged onto the insta lvl 85 server and there weren't that many people in SW nor infront of Elwynn Forest. I also read a few comments saying Q 3s, which makes me think 3s is also pretty much dead on the instant level servers, unless it's different on the wrath servers.
