Can anyone hack your pc through world of warcraft??!
recently I've had an argument with a player and then he started telling me about my location and he was able to open my webcam as well! I'm a computer programmer and I'm 100% sure that my computer is secured but how could someone just open your webcam and determine your location so easily through world of warcraft and especially on a secured and safe server like warmane?
The only way a person can hack your computer using your IP address is using an open port that's beyond firewall but all of my ports are closed and by the way my business is in developing apps and programs not in security lol. Thanks for your language tho

You sure about that those closed ports, bud? Also as a programmer you REALLY should know about basic stuff like this and why the hell are you asking question like this in a WoW forum, where most people are not even remotely qualified to answer questions like this.

As I said before my business is not in the security field and those are not basic things! Besides that perhaps there's a glitch in the server and the moderators has to know about that. Am I right?

Well, you know enough about security to be "100% sure" you're safe, no? So either you know that's bull**** or you don't know enough to be 100% sure, simply put. Either way, even not knowing anything about security, you should know as a programmer that a program can't do something unless it's coded to do that. Can you point what part of World of Warcraft would have code to show your IP to players or let them control your webcam? I mean, if something like that existed, chances are that in over a decade of the game people would have found out and made a huge issue out of it with Blizzard, don't you think?

Actually in computer science studies we were studying network .. same as you did. But you probably forgot that because you didn't specialize in that area that is why you don't remember. Me 2 I don't care about the security only the implementation of some other things in the app, you know what I mean....
PEOPLE! This is not a place to share knowledge ok? If you want I can give you my linked in username later but for now let's just focus on how we can solve this problem and by the way this glitch is not caused by the game client and I still hope that a GM will respond to this.
I hardly think it's possible to hack someone's PC using world of warcraft. Your warcraft client connects to the wow server you assign it to. It is up to that wow server to limit the amount of access you have to that server and all that is connected to it. If someone were to hack your pc using wow, it would be because the server let you do it, which would mean that the server is not secure at all. I doubt that's the case with warmane since security is their top priority since moltdown.
P.S. Even if someone were to know your IP address, it still gives them about 0.01% of information they would probably need to hack your pc.

actually, if you know my IP you can use a number of programs or just a classic terminal to check my open ports and, if any are found, you can try to sneak your way in as a "client to the service the port usually provides"
example if I'm hosting a TeamSpeak server, you'll know I have a serverquery set on it as well probably on the default port, so if you see a port in the 'serverquery' range open, you can try, if I'm an ***** and don't change passwords or make an 'admin' 'admin' account... you can basically hack my teamspeak like that... and that could technically be called hacking my computer... even tho it's not the webcam functionality mentioned by original poster
True. But that would technically also be a bit of a case of allowing yourself to get hacked if you have some pretty weak passwords.
But I guess that in such a case the hacker would be using brute force to guess the password. Ofcoarse there is also the slow brute force to take into consideration.
Brute force can be detected though. But i guess all and all, the chances of how easy a person can hack your pc, highly depend on how easy you make it for them.
You never said if he showed you a proof of hacking your camera. If this indeed did happen, it's a friend, or someone pretending to be a friend in order to gain required information aka social engineering. He most likely got your IP through Skype or any 3rd party software you use for communicating with your friends in-game. Also if you're using the same username for everything, just a simple googling can bring enough information.
What I would suggest you is going to shodan.io and checking with the IP assigned to the camera, whether it's publicly accessible or not. Furthermore make sure your username is not admin if prompted to login, if so change it. Try to remember if recently any of your friends sent you any files and scan them, or someone in-game asked for your skype, etc..
In the end, it's most likely a friend trolling you. Or you trolling us.
