I made a new gnome character, bought the mechanostrider at lvl 20 and was able to mount initially. But now I cannot mount at all. Is there a bug? Is there a way to mount up?

After some leveling and rdf's, seems like I can mount up again. Not sure what caused the bug

And the bug is back again. After I visited stormwind to buy some new skills..

its a known bug that will not be fixed. it comes with the WOD models I was told by the GMs so either use original models, download a file that removes the mechanostrider new model or don't try to mount in areas that have something overhead. u cant mount anywhere in IF, select locations in Magic quarters in SW u can mount. It also affects the 100% mechanostrider.

yes, it is causedd by WoD models.
You can remove them if you want:
1. Open WoW folder
2. Open the Data folder.
3. Delete the patch-w.mpq file.
4. Delete the patch-x.mpq file
5. Open the enUS folder.
6. Delete the patch-enUS-w.mpq file.
7. Delete the patch-enUS-x.mpq file

I'm not familiar with what WoD models are. If I follow these steps, what happens in-game? Why do removing these files fix the mounting issue?

you have downlaoded a Wotlk client with "WoD models" (better looking texture).
follow that guide and you will have a "standard" Wotlk client
