I'm curious about what makes the anticheat (AC) trigger. Can a "/script"-command ingame be counted as a "illegal" script? Can an addon affect the game in a way that AC flags it? Or addons like auctioneer, which can post several different things on AH with the press with one command? I have seen a lot of comments saying "there are no false positivtes" following this recent ban-wave and i'm curious how that can be guaranteed since other AC-engines, like Blizzards own, do in fact have false positives.
There's no detailed information on how it works because nobody wants people finding ways to get around it.
Is it /script? Well no, not every single one. Using /script LeaveParty() will not get you banned.
Auctioneer is safe, i use it. No issues what so ever.
What it does pick up is those unlockers unlocking usually "hidden away" functions people can abuse.
It was stated already that Sentinel wasn't responsible regarding those bans, human is. It has been dismissed as a possible mistake once ban appeals were submitted and so called evidence was reviewed. Now those are facts. Something was found, some modifications, alterations or w.e. you wanna call it and in the process it got labeled as hack/script. In my opinion, considering pretty much everyone is clueless about what they did to cause it, source of it is not that black and white. It may as well be some (even more than one) less common addon (FluidFrames, RangeDisplay, !!Zoom!! (?) etc) who could theoretically do such alterations and at the same time leaving its users unaware they are using something illegal (u download it extract it to interface folder and don't think twice, it's just an addon right?). That would explain why everyone finds situation unfair. Still, a little research showed blizz would just patch such addons(?).
I think there's a warning somewhere that states to use addons at your own risk. Obviously, it's a risk. The wow client is modify-able to a great degree, and unfortunately, some of those modifications cross a line you can't cross. The server doesn't provide you with legal lists of addons, so always be weary with what you touch.
Add-ons by themselves don't cause bans. Even if one tried to use a function it's not supposed to have access to, nothing would happen if, again, they were used by themselves.
I've already been seeing posts edging "phase three" around, where the focus is being shifted to "not getting any advantage," so let me give a reminder: it doesn't matter what it's used for, if it's minor, if it's quality of life, if it "gives no advantage;" all that matters is the use.
