There's a lot of topics regarding this but none actually specify the npc name or which MPQ its stored in, the ghosts are apparently a vanilla npc, does anyone know the exact name and which mpq its in?

Why not check a mod like this one? https://forum.warmane.com/showthread.php?t=473689
Open it with mpqeditor and change it in place.
The reason I was looking for the original ghost sprite in the default patch is because I can't bring myself to download a patch from a random player, but i managed to figure it out anyway, replaced the ghost with a phoenix using Ladiks MPQ editor, was surprisingly easy.
