I've run the numbers and it's actually not mathematically impossible.
Let's assume that on the 40 bosses you mentioned, you saw 10 items that you wanted and that on each item, you had 4 competitors, I took random numbers but it seems fair to me based on experience.
The probability to win only 1 item is about 37,6%. We're far from statistical anomaly.
I can detail the maths behind if you want but it's just how RNG works.
