How do i transfer items between characters on icecrown and is it possible to transfer between horde and alliance?

You can transfer account bound items by sending them via mail. Yes, even between horde and alliance.

I just tried it and its telling me "Target is unfriendly"

Only account-bound items (those that say "Binds to account") can be mailed to another character of the same account.

So is there a different way to transfer items? (i know ah exists but that one seems so inconvenient)

Neutral AH is the most approachable solution. It comes with its own risks as people (bots) may snipe valuable goods if you price them lowly.

There are some people around who switch gold and select items between the factions as a service.
If you want to send big batches of items between the factions, actual faction change might be something to consider. Though that's best to leave out of the regular methods, unless you're shifting big piles worth a lot of gold and you want it risk free without relying on 3rd party players.

You can't send items between characters of the same account using the neutral AH, you would have to use a second account.
