Catch up for what?
Just spec both to healer, wait for wotlk, and enjoy isntant rdf pop all the way to 80.
With prepatch starting in less than two weeks your best bet is just farming PvP gear. It's better than anything PvE you can get in the short time frame. The S2 set and S4 off pieces are better than Northrend starting gear so it will make the transition pretty smooth.
RDF isn't technically available until level 71. Utgarde Keep is the only dungeon at 70. Dungeons are easy when you're geared, but if you're doing Utgarde Keep second boss in TBC greens as a healer for example then your group might get clapped especially since nobody will follow tactics. Important to at least get a Northrend starter set from initial quests. But if you do get the full PvP set then you're definitely good to go.
Just quest. You get much more gold, minimum gear, gold for AH pieces and when you're bored do dungeon runs + find Kara groups via `/join global` and pick up a few badge pieces.
Unless you are a hardcore PvP player, there is zero point stepping foot into battlegrounds due to no S4 honor gear, except perhaps to casually pick up the Merciless weapons which are relatively low cost.
You are better off with initial gold + getting used to your class in group content settings + socializing/finding potential guilds as early as possible, rather than explicitly focussing on gearing during prepatch as a new player.
If you are serious about raiding, you can checkout Warmane's Armory and look for active top 100 guilds for your faction. Guilds that have managed to last all the way to the end of an expansion, tend to be unusually strong against the worst enemy of all ... the Roster Boss! If you can sneak into these guilds, even as just nominally a social, it is usually worthwhile and can even get you carried into other content.
And you'll want to immediately start the Shattered Sun Offensive dailies on the Sunstrider Isle due to their gold efficiency and potential Magister's Normal groups.
S2 gear is on par with T4 gear stats except S2 gear right now is significantly easier to obtain. No reason to be wasting time in dungeons or Kara anymore. See example below:
https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=320...led-chestpiece
https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=290...ar-breastplate
Similar stats except the S2 chest piece offers 200 extra armor and 30 stam. Significantly better for leveling.
Can you please not tell people in TBC - starter gear to enter Battlegrounds this late in the expansion.
Me and many other ppl still play Battlegrounds for fun.
People in fresh gear get literally one shot. They are beyond useless.
With the general defeatist mentallity of Warmane players where half the team will just afk when you are behind after the first minute, having 2-3 people in fresh gear in your team makes it an instant loss.
You dont tell them to find SWP raid either do you?
afaik warmane has some sort of a matchmaking system implemented in bgs, sorting people by their gear, the chances of you as a bis player getting a fresh 70 geared guy in ur bg are pretty rare, atleast from my experience.
As mentioned they're in some other bracket. In any case there aren't many serious players in battlegrounds now because their gear is maxed out this late in the phase. It is just a bunch of new S2 players that are basically an HK farm or running around clueless on your own team. I played last night for fun and it was some of the worst gameplay I've seen all year. It's still fun, but I'm seeing some really silly things.
