How to make an avatar that fits in the space allowed

I was just wondering what people use that would allow me to use a picture that would fit in the size allotment for my avatar. Might be something simple but would like my picture to be something different then a stone murloc. Thanks.

Well if you went to the avatar page u'll see

Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 150 by 200 pixels or 97.7 KB (whichever is smaller).

Anything in this format fits, if you can't figure out how to resize a picture you can do it either manually with Paint/Photoshop or use a website for auto re-scalling picresize.com for example.
