1. Calculating the monthly costs of Warmane [Speculative]

We know that Warmane has 6 public realms, we also know that they use Dual E5 CPU's and at least 64GB RAM per machine *(as per information from old molten-wow website).

    ▪ Servers. Each realm runs on a dedicated server with Dual Octa-core E5-2690, 64 GB RAM and 1000 GB SSD
    http://web.archive.org/web/201407041...m/information/

    The realms are:
    Deathwing
    Ragnaros
    Neltharion
    Frostwolf
    Blackrock
    Warsong

+ 2 unnamed test realms they have for devloping and events.

It's safe to say that each realm will use only 1 CPU / 8 cores/16 Threads, Instead of getting 2 seperate lower quality machines for high price, they'll likely buy one higher spec machine for lower price after switching to OVH from Softlayer. Therefore it's very likely they bought: Octa core CPU MG-128 models instead of Quad core CPU SP-64 models.

    https://www.ovh.com/us/dedicated-ser...014-MG-128.xml

Therfore hardwarewise, one MG--128 is configured to run 2 realms under different ip-addresses. One CPU is allocated to each realm.

We have total 8 realms(6 public + 2 test), which makes it 4 servers for realms only. Each server costs $269.00 USD/Month, totaling $1076 USD/Month

They also have Database and Website+Forums, so another MG--128 should do (1 CPU for each). Making the entire infrastructure to be 5 physical servers and costing $1345 USD/Month

Disregarding possible CloudFlare plans/Certificates which both can be free and paid without users noticing anything, the hardware only costs $1345 USD/Month

Next are the personel costs. Moderators/GM's get coins but developing costs quite a lot assuming Molten still offers 2kUSD paychecks. Since there is no data how many people are employed with the default payment of 2kUSD, let's assume they have 4 developers that gets paid 2kusd, making the monthly paycheck go up to

    Hardware - $1345 USD/Month +$200 USD/Month (Licenses, Fees, etc).
    Personel (4) $8000 USD

Making it OVER 9000!!! (usd) Feel free to correct me :)

  2. What exactly do you plan to achieve by calculating these costs? seems like waste of time to me.

  3. You are wrong on so, so many levels.

  4. What exactly do you plan to achieve by calculating these costs? seems like waste of time to me.
I love all tech stuff, and it excites me how far private servers have come :P Im just doing this for fellow tech geeks.

You are wrong on so, so many levels.
Feel free to correct us :D

  5. That's as far as I need to go to correct you.

  6. Pft.. how prideful :/ Well, fine then. keep your secrets :(

-I suppose someone else may contribute in this thread then :)

  7. It has nothing to do with pride.

For one, you claim you are "doing it for tech geeks," yet from the very title of the thread it has to do with money, not with tech.
Besides that, information about finances and costs really fall into the realm of "no-one-besides-Administration's-business."

  8. As the owner of a game server that generates revenue in the exact same manner as Warmane (albeit not nearly as much), I can tell you that there is no way in hell anyone from Warmane is going to give up that sort of private information-- or any kind of private information for that matter.

Why? The information is sensitive and can be used against them (you'd be surprised). Seriously just use your imagination for a little while.

  9. servers got an upgrade and are DEDICATED, ALOT of backup servers on different hosts, you also screwed up on the servers:
-lordaeron (real server just in ptr mode)
    -ragnaros
    -deathwing
    -blackrock
    -neltharion
    -warsong
    -frostwolf
-probably some more test rooms (dont need much hardware)

mods and gms dont get paid in coins as far as I know, it is a passion and a job one said. you do get paid.
amount of developers you screwed hard aswell, you say 4 but make it 10-12 atleast. then about their salary: 2k was for a JUNIOR dev. seniors had indication of 5k. Don't forget that there is edifice the web dev aswell, kaer who is not running this for free etc. etc. any idea how fast thr development on lordaeronbis progressing while mop is still getting (small) updates aswell?

any idea about Q&A team? those are paid aswell as far as I know. count atleast 10 of them aswell, but maybe you can imagine it being alot more.
how about taxes? remember not to evade them but pay them.

  10. A big mistake, each server has 1 dedicated machine each, not 1 machine for 2 servers.

  11. A big mistake, each server has 1 dedicated machine each, not 1 machine for 2 servers.
In that case they wouldn't need so much Cores/RAM and would buy cheaper servers.. ..except there are none that has octa core and is single processor machine @ sale in OVH.. So they'd have to downgrade technical requirements for the software to fit into lower specc OVH machines, or.. they could buy better servers and divide the logically to have equal power compared to old hardware at softlayer and save some cash too.

And it's not like trinitycore and it's variances (moltencore, etc.) supports dual CPU setups lol. at most they'll have a software that is capable of employing 1 CPU and its all cores/threads per realm.. in that case the other CPU runs empty load? thats a financial suicide. obviously they have 2 realms per machine in powerful setup like this.

  12. Skimmed over the numbers, can confirm it's wrong.

  13. s it is a passion and a job one said.
That was me, I guess. I remember saying that a lot. It's no secret that all of our staff are highly dedicated staff members. Our GM team deals with more than 16 000 ticket responses each month, our moderating team does thousands of mod actions and the QA team goes through testing absolutely huge chunks of content and on top of that we probably have the largest development team out there full of skilled individuals whose work is absolutely amazing.

Our servers are high-end machines and not the common stuff you can order like it's pizza but hardware and similar costs fade in comparison to having a team of 40 + people being dedicated full time to Warmane. We are proud of making a difference in the lives of those that contribute to the well-being of our project. I guess you can see that the team mentality and pride is strong by the amount of 'we' and 'our' in this post.

  14. whats the point of this thread anyway?
