I know Shammys recently got broke from the update, but, when they are eventually bug-free (if such a state exists), how are they? How are elemental shammys in PvP compared to, say Frost Mages and Balance Druids, and how are Resto shammys in PvE healing, compared to Resto druids and Monks?
Resto is maybe the best PVE healer in MOP, it has so many healing tools for any possible situation (istant single target healing, strong aoe healing and sustained multi target healing)
Elemental is on the bottom side of the dps chart, it has always been a support spec back from wotlk.. But it is a high valuable raid member for the buffs it gives to the whole raid (Spell power, mastery and haste) and for the healing cds which can really make the difference.
Talking about PvP, elemental is very strong in 3v3, 5v5 and bg environment: very nice damage output, strong off healing but the lack of ccs and being a little too squishy make this spec less viable in 2v2.. Nevertheless you can still go for > 2.2k rating with a good balance druid, destro warlock or disci priest :)
I have done a bit of 3s with my full grievous elemental shami, a affli lock and holy pala and im rather unhappy with the result.
I see the main problem of elemental in the long casting time for comparable low dmg.
Even when u focus just on haste u cant cast lightning bolt and lava burst in under 1,5 - 1,6 seconds.
Because of this long casting time average arena enemys have a easy time to constantly interrupt u with the plenty of CC effects that MoP offers.
The result is that u are forced to just spread ur flame shock on all enemys and wait for the instant lava burst proc.
This can work but other classes like moonkin or affli lock also spread their dots and wait for procs and they pull twice if not triple of ur dmg with this method.
I had a fights against Moonkin/affli/resto shami and they played pretty bad. They didnt interrupt me for the whole game so I was able to spam lava burst after lava burst during ascendance. In the end we still lost and after cheking the statistic I noticed that the affli pulled twice and the moonkin three times more dmg than me.
That was the moment where I gave up on arena with my elemental shami. Whats the point of doing arena as ele shami when certain classes, that seem to be positive bugged, just out dmg u like insane? Imo a elemental shami that doesnt get interrupted and can cast for free should be a brutal killing machine like back on Wotlk.

Remember that LSD2 was one of the most dominant team comp in 3s on retail, and you miss a resto druid on your team, replacing the holy paladin. You HAVE to spread your flame shock on all of your target if you want to do significant dmg, it won't be the same of an affli lock or bdruid, but you can really make the difference with your lava surge procs. If you don't find yourself comfortable with that comp try thubdercleave (with awar and restodruid) and shattercleave (with frost mage and resto druid).

The thing is that I dont really see the point to play elemental when moonkin can do pretty much the same things but better.
Moonkin has stronger heals, more dmg, more cc effects, better mobility and solar beam which I consider as a better interrupt than windshear.
Is there anything that a ele shami can do better?

This. I like the idea of throwing lightning and having totems, but if a Balance druid is better than Elemental, and Resto Dudu better than Resto Shammy,...why pick a Shaman at all except for buffs?

For me, it's just a matter of heart. I've been playing ele shaman for 7 years in 3 different xpacs , the reason is because i love this spec and things i can do with it. You should never choose you class olny because it's the strongest, otherwise we would all play the same thing :)
