It's basic knowledge that on one toon, you can have about two professions. You have a choice between a Production type profession, or a Gathering type profession. All professions have benefits to your stats regardless of it's type. Now in regards to gold profit, I'd suggest that you personally start with a gathering profession to start you off going into a production profession. This way you can get your own materials and make $$$ off it. It's still however very possible to start with two production professions that both make profit. Just establish your capital and make sure you work on a profit/surplus in gold.
General Rule of Thumb
" Find a product that is needed by everyone at a certain point "
To expound on this, you can refer to yourself and what you need, think about it from the scale of the community and capitalize from it. Eaaasy.
Notes:
- The market is competitive, keep your AH listings short(12 hours)
- It will cost more gold to spend for more hours
- You'll most likely be facing a barrage of undercuts leading to sales 'not happening'
- The tax of the being able to sell an item is 5%
- That is the (value of product) - (value of product x 0.05)
- You don't wanna undercut by too much, people will still most likely undercut you to the point where no one gains profit.
Edit:
If I missed anything, feel free to add to it. I typed this off the top of my head.

This is very false, stop feeding into that "Only way to make money is raid reserving BoEs" mentality.
