why does it seem I only get mining skill points for 1st hit on ore nodes ? i can mine nodes that are orange and still only get 1 point for 3+ hits on it.

You gain levels from reaching the loot, not the skill animation.

That's just the way mining works. You gain a skill-up for "tapping" the node - the first successful mining action taken on a node.

By design, you will not gain skill ups for any further mining from a node you've already tapped.

Among other design reasons, this primarily serves to ensure that you can't just take the action of mining a node, without retrieving the ore from the loot box, and repeating the action on the same node XX times until your skill is maxed for that level of node.
