So how do I activate mercenary mode & change my faction?

Check the Checkbox next to merc mode.
You can't pick your faction, you'll be dropped wherever there's a first queue pop.

As for the actual faction change, you go to https://www.warmane.com/account/services
Select your realm, character, desired currency and under services "Faction change"

At bottom, you need to enable "Opt-in to Mercenary Mode on Wrath of the Lich King"

Once you do that, you might be in "Horde" team in BG (even with your alliance characters). That is it

yes, in BG and Arena you play with players from other Wotlk Realms as well

Simply untick it where skullatbash said it's located. You can't remove crossrealm.
