Tell your guy to send an email describing situation. Don't bother with backup files, those are for completely different purpose.
From my perspective he wont get shards back with 100% certainty. He has to live with consequences of the accident he created. What you and all the friends can do is throw together coin gift for his SM, make him whole again.

Or you guys could just host icc25 raids with sfs reserved.
But trust me, person isn't getting his sfs back. Not if it was 1 sfs, nor 49 sfs. "Warmane doesn't refund currency." That was the reply when I provided a whole video of a raid of mine where I'm clearly the person looting all the sfs and one got "stuck" in Rotface's corpse. lol
